While attending the ‘Closed Plenary Session of the 16th BRICS Summit’ in Kazan, Russia; India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “India supports dialogue and diplomacy, not war. Just as we together defeated a challenge like COVID, in the same way, we are fully capable of creating new opportunities for a safe, strong and prosperous future for the future generation. Similarly, we should work for global regulations for cyber security, safe and secure AI”. He underlined that the BRICS countries should strongly deal with terrorism and terror financing.
Continuing, PM Modi shared: “We all have to be united and cooperate strongly to deal with terrorism and terror financing. There is no place for double standards on such a serious issue. We should take active steps to prevent radicalization among the youth of our countries. We have to work together on the pending issue of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism in the UN.”
‘BRICS’ is an intergovernmental organization consisting of five major emerging economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. However, increased membership could pose challenges in decision-making and consensus-building within the group.
The two-day BRICS Summit took place in Kazan under Russia’s chairmanship. Leaders of BRICS nation, including PM Modi and Xi Jinping, were in Kazan for the summit. PM Modi described the BRICS Summit in Russia’s Kazan as “very productive”. He thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin, the people of Russia and their government for their hospitality.
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi also met with Mr. Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China, in a bilateral meet, on the sidelines of the 16th BRICS Summit. On Meeting, both PM Modi and Chinese President had historic handshake, where Mr Modi shared: “We believe that the importance of India-China relations is not just for our people. Our relations are also important for global peace, stability and progress. Mutual Trust, Mutual Respect, and Mutual Sensitivity should continue to be the basis of our relations. Today we have got an opportunity to discuss all these issues. I am confident that we will talk with an open mind, and our discussion will be constructive.”
Welcoming the recent agreement for complete disengagement and resolution of issues that arose in 2020 in the India-China border areas, Prime Minister Modi underscored the importance of properly handling differences and disputes and not allowing them to disturb peace and tranquility. The two leaders agreed that the Special Representatives on the India-China boundary question will meet at an early date to oversee the management of peace & tranquility in border areas and to explore a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable solution to the boundary question. The relevant dialogue mechanisms at the level of Foreign Ministers and other officials will also be utilized to stabilize and rebuild bilateral relations.
The two leaders affirmed that stable, predictable, and amicable bilateral relations between India and China, as two neighbors and the two largest nations on earth, will have a positive impact on regional and global peace and prosperity. It will also contribute to a multi-polar Asia and a multi-polar world. The leaders underlined the need to progress bilateral relations from a strategic and long-term perspective, enhance strategic communication and explore cooperation to address developmental challenges.
Thus, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping . This development had already been confirmed by India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. Notably, it was the first bilateral talks between two leaders after India and China reached an agreement on patrolling and disengagement along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Eastern Ladakh.
Prior to this, Misri had also announced that India and China reached an agreement on patrolling along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, in a major breakthrough in ending the over four-year-long military standoff between the two armies. China also confirmed reaching the agreement with India.
The Summit, themed “Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security” provided an important platform for leaders to discuss key global issues. Earlier in the day, PM Modi had also held bilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the summit.
During his meeting with Putin, PM Modi offered cooperation towards in resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict in a peaceful manner. The Prime Minister said that Russia-Ukraine conflict should be resolved in a peaceful manner. Modi held bilateral talks with Putin hours after arriving in the central Russian city to attend the 16th BRICS summit. PM Modi invited Putin to visit India next year for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit. The two leaders reviewed bilateral cooperation in various sectors, including political, economic, defense, energy, and people-to-people ties.
In a post on X, PM Modi stated, “Had an excellent meeting with President Putin. The bond between India and Russia is deep-rooted. Our talks focused on how to add even more vigor to our bilateral partnership across diverse sectors.”
Meanwhile, it was PM Modi’s first meeting with Pezeshkian also after he took over as President of Iran in July this year, 2024. PM Modi also met Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
PM Modi also expressed, “The Summit is happening at a time when the world is undergoing several uncertainties and challenges including conflicts, adverse climatic impacts, and cyber threats”, placing greater expectations upon BRICS. He suggested that the group take a people-centric approach to tackle these challenges.
