    PM Narendra Modi to Visit Guyana and Nigeria Ahead of G20 Summit

    In a significant move to enhance the bilateral ties between the two nations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to visit Guyana and Nigeria in the middle of November. He will visit the two nations while coinciding with his visit to Brazil, where he will be participating in the G20 summit on November 18-19. Notably, this will be the first visit of the Indian Prime Minister to Guyana and Nigeria, which are the members of the Global South Community.

    Guyana Confirms PM Modi’s Visit

    A senior government official in Guyana has recently confirmed PM Modi’s visit to the country. He said, “Preparations are being put in place” for the high-level visit in November”. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s trip to Guyana will be a bilateral visit to strengthen their ties and to attend the CARICOM-India Summit. This will be a two-day summit, which will take place in Georgetown, Guyana.

    Reportedly, the Indian Prime Minister’s visit is followed by the recent visit of top officials from Guyana. These include President, Dr Irfaan Ali Khan, Prime Minister, Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, Prime Minister Mark Philips, and several others.

    President Dr Irfaan Ali Khan’s Visit to India

    Last year in January, the President of Guyana, Dr Irfaan Ali Khan, was awarded with the Bhartiya Samman Award (PBSA) in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. This is the highest honor received by an overseas Indian. The award was presented by Indian President Draupadi Murmu during the closing ceremony of the 17th Pravasi Bhartiya Divas convention.

    During President Irfaan Ali’s visit to India, he also met PM Modi and engaged in comprehensive discussions on a wide range of topics such as cooperation in energy, infrastructure development, technology and innovation, and defense cooperation.

    About the CARICOM-India Summit

    Meanwhile, PM Modi’s visit is important to enhance the relations and diplomatic ties between the two nations. This will be the first time that Modi will hold a summit meeting with CARICOM leaders on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in 2019 in New York. PM Narendra Modi will meet 14 CARICOM leaders. He will engage in discussions on various topics such as economic cooperation, disaster management, and climate change.

    The meeting will be attended by various heads of government from Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Jamaica, St Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Jamaica, Trinidad, and Tobago, along with the Vice President of Suriname and Foreign Ministers of the Bahamas, Belize, Grenada, Haiti, and Guyana. This is the first meeting for deepening bilateral relations between India and Caribbean countries.

    PM Modi’s Visit to Nigeria

    In the case of Nigeria, this will be the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the country since Manmohan Singh in 2007. During his visit, he met Nigerian President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and signed the Abuja Declaration on Strategic Partnership. It aimed to enhance cooperation in various fields such as trade, energy, and technology.

    However, during PM Modi’s visit to Nigeria, he will be focusing on strengthening their strategic partnership and discussing various ways of cooperation in trade, investment, and capacity building.

    G-20 Summit in Brazil

    This is to be noted that the 2024 G20 summit will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on November 18 and 19. This summit will bring together leaders from the world’s major economies to discuss global issues related to economic cooperation, climate change, and sustainable development. The 2024 summit’s theme is ‘Building a just world and a sustainable planet’. The summit will be attended by 19 member countries, an African Union and a European Union. These 19 countries are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, France, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, the Russian Federation, the UK, and the USA.
