A Nexus for Thermal Management Research

The new center at IIT Madras will be ISRO’s primary base for research into the thermal management of spacecraft and launch vehicles. This will benefit the researchers to address complicated thermal issues related to design analysis and testing of necessary spacecraft components.

By utilizing IIT Madras’s educational tools, the institute aims to enhance ISRO’s technological progresses and operational preparedness in space missions.

Primary Objective of ISRO and IIT Madras Collaboration

    Advanced Research Projects:

The projects will ensure to cover critical aspects. These include spacecraft thermal management, combustion instability in hybrid rockets, and cryo-tank thermodynamics.

    Industry-Academia Collaboration

This innovative partnership between ISRO’s scientists and IIT Madras’s faculty will foster innovation in fluid and thermal sciences.

    Project Funding

An initial funding of INR 1.84 crore will be provided by ISRO. This funding will be used to establish the Centre and for necessary infrastructure and equipment. The further funding will be used for maintenance and for future projects in fluid-thermal sciences.

Highlighting this collaboration, Prof. Arvind Pattamatta notes, “By addressing complex thermal engineering challenges, we aim to contribute significantly to the nation’s space program and strengthen India’s self-reliance in space technologies.”

    Continuing the Legacy of Collaboration

The recent collaboration of ISRO and IIT Madras stands on the historical partnership of both the institutes that has been in place since 1985.

    Historical Context:

Established in 1985, the “ISRO-IIT Madras Space Technology Cell” was a major initiative. The aim was to develop foundational knowledge and promoting self-sufficient space research in India.
