The northern region of India is facing poor air quality for the past few weeks. Amid these security concerns regarding the health, the IMD has issued a ‘yellow alert’ in the state of Punjab.
According to the reports there was a little relief in the air quality on 15th November. However, the morning of 16th November reported less visibility and dense fog, resulting in the warning.
What is a Yellow Alert?
A yellow alert is a preemptive warning pointing adverse weather conditions that might happen. However, the situation is not that severe. The warning is issues to aware people about the conditions, so that they remain informed.
IMD Issues Yellow Alert in Punjab
The Indian Meteorological Department revealed the AQI report of Punjab and issued a yellow alert. For most parts of the day, AQI stayed under the ‘poor’ quality and occasionally reached ‘moderate’ at times.
- Till 8:30 am, zero visibility was recorded at Amritsar and Chandigarh Airports.
- Patiala recorded the visibility at 10 meters, Halwara and Faridkot at 50 meters, Pathankot, Adampur, Bathinda and Ludhiana at 100 meters.
How is This Impacting the State’s Functionality?
The deteriorating air quality is affecting the political campaigning in Barnala and Gidderbaha, as people opt for staying indoor prioritizing safety.
Many claim that they had to visit door-to-door or business establishments where only a few numbers of people attend the public meetings. The worsening air quality has affected the day activities as well because the day starts after 9:00 am.
The guidelines have been instructed for elderly people advising them to stay inside. Commuters ae advised reach their destinations before evening and avoid travelling during the night time.
Precautions to Follow During Yellow Alert
Stay Updated
- Frequently monitor local news and weather updates.
- Keep Tracking the changes in the alert or any additional precautionary warnings.
- Follow the guidelines issues by the advisories from local agencies or meteorological officials.
Avoid Travelling (if not urgent)
- The most basic advice from the agencies is to avoid travelling as much as you can. In case of emergency, try to travel during daytime.
- Reduce your vehicle speed, drive cautiously, and constantly give dippers to other vehicles. This will avoid the accidents.
Use Public Transportation, If Possible
- Public transport is said to be the safer option, as they are well equipped to deal with low visibility situations.
- Keep tracking your train/ bus routes and schedules. Stay updated in case of delays.
Stay Indoors
- In situations of adverse weather conditions, agencies advise people to stay inside as much as possible.
Stay Calm and Prepared
- While a yellow alert doesn’t indicate immediate changes, but it is better to stay informed and prepared for the future conditions.
