At just 18, India’s Gukesh Dommaraju scripted history, by becoming the youngest-ever World Chess Champion. He has defeated China’s Ding Liren in the 14th and final game. The occasion was FIDE World Chess Championship-2024 held in Singapore
Heading into the game on 6.5 points each, the final match also seemed to head towards a draw. However, a late blunder by Ding Liren handed Gukesh the victory. For all the world, it seemed like the match would head to a rapid blitz tie-breaker, and it was all set to be a draw. But on his 55th move Liren made a mistake, where he chose to sacrifice his rook, which proved to be the disaster at the very end.
Gukesh becomes the first Indian World Chess Champion since Viswanathan Anand in 2012. It caps off a stunning year for Gukesh, who has also won the Candidates 2024 tournament and the Chess Olympiad gold. Gukesh also became the first teenager to become World Chess Champion.
It is indeed a special moment for a special gem in the world of the Chess. It was very emotional moment for the 18-year-old Gukesh Dommaraju on becoming the 18th world chess champion, when he could not control his tears of joy for many a second.
In fact, at about 18:37 of IST, Ding Liren ended up losing his rook, and this move was a huge error! Gukesh was potentially on the verge of a World Chess Championship crown! He forwarded advantage to Gukesh. Ding Liren realized his blunder and resigned. And, Gukesh, at the age of just 18 years, became the World Chess Champion.
FIDE, or the World Chess Federation, is the highest-level organization of chess associations in various countries around the world, headquartered in Athens, Greece. It was founded in Paris. 158 organizations are involved in it. Its motto is “We are one people.” This ‘International Chess Federation (FIDE)’ is the governing body of the sport of chess, and it regulates all international chess competitions.
FIDE has the sole rights to organize the World Chess Championships and the Chess Olympiads. FIDE unites national chess federations throughout the world and oversees all international competitions. The seat of FIDE is in Lausanne, Switzerland.
In order to get a Standard rating of FIDE in India, a player needs to play at least 5 games against players who are already rated, and score at least ½ point (a draw) in those games. FIDE publishes its new rating list on the last day of every month, to come into use from the first day of the new month.
