Robindra Ghosh, a prominent Bangladeshi lawyer defending the case of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das’s arrest, has been currently in Barrackpore, near Kolkata, for medical treatment. According to the reports, Ghosh arrived in India with his wife earlier on Sunday, December 15, 2024. They have been staying with their son Rahul Ghosh, who has been staying in Barrackpore, West Bengal, for several years.

“My father arrived with my mother last evening and is currently living with us. He met with an accident three years ago, and for treatment, he frequently visits India,” said Rahul Ghosh, son of lawyer Robindra Ghosh, on Monday, December 16, 2024.

Speaking to a credible news media organization, Rahul expressed his concern about his father’s safety in Bangladesh and urged him to stay in India for some time.

“I have requested my father to not return to Bangladesh and to stay here with us for a while. But he is adamant and wants to go back, as he is determined to fight the case of ISKCON monk Chinmoy Krishna Das. We are deeply worried about his safety,” he said.

This is to be noted that Rahul Ghosh has been staying with his wife and children in Barrackpore in India. His father, Robindra Ghosh, 75, is a senior lawyer of the Bangladesh Supreme Court. He is also the founder-president of Bangladesh Minority Watch. He stays in Bangladesh with his wife Krishna, a retired school teacher. Her wife stays alone in Dhaka while Ghosh is travelling for the legal proceedings of the monk case.

“I have been in constant touch with my parents. After the Chittagong incident. I spoke to my father in Dhaka. He said he had filed a complaint in Chittagong after receiving threats. He might have been provided police protection in Chittagong, but he will have to stay unprotected on reaching Dhaka,” Rahul said.

But Ghosh has his friends and colleagues in Bangladesh and said that he would return soon to Bangladesh to continue to fight against the rights and violations.

“He is the man of principles. Even we have become used to constant threats. It’s the price he—and, by extension, our family—has had to pay for keeping up the fight. Even my sisters, who live in Canada, are worried,” Rahul added.

Backgrounds of Chinmoy Krishna Das Arrest

He has been representing various minority groups in Bangladesh for three decades. Recently, after the arrest of ISKCON monk Chinmoy Krishna Das, he hit the headlines while moving an application for a bail hearing in Chittagong Court. He was allegedly targeted by a group of lawyers protesting against the bail of Krishna Das.

Chinmoy Krishna Das was arrested earlier this month at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport while travelling to Chattogram for a rally. He was denied bail and sent to jail till January 2 by a court in Bangladesh. He was arrested on the charges of sedition and disrespecting the Bangladeshi flag. While ISKCON and other Hindu communities defended his arrest completely, calling the allegations baseless and a plotted conspiracy.

Lawyer Robindra Ghosh has been actively defending the arrested monk. He has also acknowledged the risks involved with his work.

“Since I am defending Chinmoy Das Prabhu, I am aware that false cases could be filed against me. And there is also a threat to my life,” Ghosh earlier reported.

    Ongoing Conflict in Bangladesh

The Hindu community in Bangladesh has been the largest Hindu minority group, facing vulnerability due to the political turmoil. The crises have been escalated in the neighboring country following the ouster of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5, 2024.
