In a tragic turn of events, a mother and her child lost their life from asphyxiation, while the father was found in a critical condition. The event happened in Mohali on the night of December 26-27, when the family lit a coal stove (angeethi) inside a closed room for warmth. The family was living in the Punjab Greater Society.

The house owner, said in his statement that Deepak and his family resided in the servant quarters. On the night of the incident, he and his wife,  Parshupati, and their 18-month-old child, went to sleep after they lit a coal stove to keep the room warm. During the night, Deepak began to have trouble breathing and tried to rouse his wife and child. Unfortunately, both were unresponsive, and the room quickly filled with smoke, causing Deepak to lose consciousness as well.

Following the complaint, the police team promptly arrived at the scene and rushed the three victims to the hospital. The family was later transferred to PGI Chandigarh, where the woman and child were declared dead. Deepak’s condition is still unstable and is receiving medical treatment. The police have launched an investigation into the incident, with the SHO confirming that the cause of death was asphyxiation due to the smoke from the coal stove.

    What is Asphyxiation?

Asphyxiation is a condition in which human body struggles to breathe because of lack of oxygen circulation in the body. The condition causes difficulty in breathing or complete cessation of breathing. The most common factor causing this is smoke inhalation.

A person inhales toxic smoke or fumes, such as from a fire or burning coal. It can displace oxygen in the lungs or introduce harmful gases like carbon monoxide.

How Dangerous the Situation Can Be?

Asphyxiation is an extremely dangerous situation which can be life-threating. According to medical science, human body’s cells need oxygen to function. In this situation, when body struggles to breathe the oxygen levels drop, the body’s organs—especially the brain—start to suffer from lack of oxygen. If the body is deprived of oxygen for more than 10 minutes, it can lead to brain damage and ultimately the death of the person.

Asphyxiation can cause unconsciousness, brain damage, and death if not treated immediately. Early detection and prompt medical intervention are crucial for survival
