    Celebrating the 358th Birth Anniversary of the Revered Sikh Leader – Guru Gobind Singh ji

    Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti 2025 is one of the most auspicious festivals for the Sikh community, which is being observed today, Monday, January 6, 2025. This day celebrates the 358th birth anniversary of the 10th Guru, Guru Gobind Singh.

    On this day, millions of Sikhs around the different corners of the world pay homage to the revered leader. He is believed to have established the Khalsa Path in 1699 to protect innocent religious prosecution. His contributions, sacrifices, and teachings are still continuing to inspire people worldwide.

    The festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm, not only in India but also among the Sikh communities located around the globe. It emphasizes qualities including unity, equality, devotion, etc.

    Here in this article, we will take a time to recall the contributions of the most significant leader of the Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh, towards his community.

    History behind this Day

    Born in Patna, Bihar, Guru Gobind Singh is remembered for his major contributions to Sikhism and shaping the Sikh community. His father, Guru Tegh Bahadur, the 9th Guru of the Sikhs, is believed to be killed by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb after he refused to convert his religion to Islam. After his father’s demise, Guru Gobind Singh was declared to be the final Guru of Sikhs at the age of 9.

    Guru Gobind Singh dedicated his whole life to fighting and working for the Sikh community. In the year 1780, he passed away at the age of 41, after being wounded in a battle with the Mughal forces.

    He was assassinated by two Pathan Assassins named Jamshed Khan and Wasil Beg, who were sent by Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah I. He was attacked while resting in Nanded, Maharashtra. However, despite being severely wounded, Guru managed to kill one of his assassins and injure the other. Guru succumbed to his wounds a few days later.

    Significance of this Day

    Guru Gobind Singh Ji dedicated his whole life to protecting religious freedom and the upliftment of Sikhism, he was the one who declared the Guru Granth Sahib as the permanent Sikh Guru. This is why he is known and marked with great honor and enthusiasm.

    In the Sikh community, located worldwide, it is one of the 10 Gurpurab celebrations observed over the years among Sikhs.

    According to the list of holidays by the Reserve Bank of India, banks will remain closed on Monday, January 6, 2025, for Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti.
