    Powerful 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Tibet-Nepal, Death Toll Jumps

    A massive earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 shook Nepal, with tremors felt in some parts of India, including Bihar, Delhi-NCR, and Sikkim. According to the National Earthquake Measurement Centre, the earthquake hit the region of Tibet near the China-Nepal border earlier on Tuesday, January 7, 2025.

    The quake occurred around 6:35 am IST and had its epicenter in the Tibet region, which is about 93km northeast of Lobuche, Nepal, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said. The earthquake has resulted in severe adversities, deaths, and injuries to the people.

    According to the TOI, recent reports indicate that the death toll from the earthquake in China’s Tibet has jumped to 50, and having over 60 left injured.

    “Over 1000 houses have sustained varying degrees of damage,” Xinhua news agency said.

    A state broadcaster news media, CCTV, said that Dingri County and its surrounding areas experienced very strong tremors, many buildings near the epicenter have collapsed.

    China’s President Xi Jinping on Tuesday stressed that efforts are being made to ensure the affected resident’s safety. “The full-scale search and rescue efforts, minimizing casualties to the greatest extent possible, properly resettling affected residents, and ensuring their safety and warmth through the winter,” news media CCTV stated.

    Tremors Felt in Some Parts of India

    The magnitude of the quake was so intense that the tremors were felt in some parts of India, including Bihar, Delhi-NCR, and Sikkim.

    The Indian Meteorological Department Patna has confirmed that the tremors were felt in several parts of Bihar, including the state capital, Patna. There have been no damages or casualties reported in the region.

    Two More Earthquakes Felt in the Region

    Further, according to the NCS (National Centre for Seismology), two more earthquakes struck the region later in the morning. One was of magnitude 4.7, recorded at 7:02 am IST with its epicenter at latitude 28.60 degrees North and longitude 87.68 degrees East, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

    Another earthquake recorded was of magnitude 4.9, occurred at 7:07 am IST, with its epicenter at 28.68 degrees North and 87.54 degrees East, at a depth of 30 kilometers.
