Republic Day marks the adoption of India’s constitution and the country’s transition to a republic on January 26, 1950. Every year, the celebrations mark the day with spectacular military and cultural pageantry. In New Delhi, armed forces personnel march along the Kartavya Path in an elaborate display of military might. This heroic show on the Kartavya Path obscures everything else happening across the country or globe on this auspicious day.

Chief Guest for Republic Day 2025

The chief guest of the Republic Day 2025 will be the President of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto. This marks a significant moment in India-Indonesia relations, symbolizing strong diplomatic ties and shared values between the two nations.

The presence of an international dignitary highlights India’s commitment to building global partnerships. Indonesia, being a key member of ASEAN, shares historical and cultural bonds with India, making this collaboration even more meaningful. Moreover, also Indonesia is now an official 10th member of BRICS, a group of the world’s leading emerging economies. Joining BRICS is a significant milestone for both Indonesia and the alliance.

January 26 is a special day for every Indian. It marks when India became a republic by adopting its Constitution. The date is also important because, on January 26, 1930, the Indian National Congress declared Purna Swaraj, or complete independence from British rule, which set the stage for India’s freedom struggle.

After India gained independence on August 15, 1947, it followed the Government of India Act of 1935 until a new constitution was created. The new constitution was adopted on November 26, 1949. However, January 26, 1950, was chosen as the day to implement it, to honor the earlier declaration of Purna Swaraj and mark the start of India as a republic.

Republic Day Celebrations in New Delhi

Dr. Rajendra Prasad took the oath as India’s first President on this historic day. The initial parade was held at Irwin Stadium (now Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium) in New Delhi, setting the foundation for the grand annual celebrations that followed. Since then, Republic Day has evolved into a grand event that highlights India’s growth and unity.

The term “republic” refers to a state where supreme power resides with the people and representatives elected by them. This idea is fundamental to the Constitution, which ensures basic rights for all citizens. Republic Day is a time for Indians to reflect on their rights and duties as citizens. It is also a chance to celebrate the unity in diversity, showcasing how various cultures live together peacefully in one nation.

The celebrations, inaugurated with a grand parade, are held in the capital, New Delhi, from Raisina Hill near the Rashtrapati Bhavan (President’s House), along the Kartavya Path, past India Gate, and onto the historic Red Fort. On this day, ceremonious parades take place at the Kartavya Path, which is performed as a tribute to India, its unity in diversity, and its rich cultural heritage by the states of India by building beautiful tableaus.

The theme for the tableaux at the Republic Day Parade 2025 has been decided in Hindi language as “Swarnim Bharat-Virasat aur Vikas” meaning “Golden India: Heritage and Development”. Republic Day 2025 parade will be showcasing India’s rich cultural heritage, military strength, and achievements.

Ministry of Defense in collaboration with MyGov calls on the citizens to participate in various contests on the occasion of the 76th Republic Day, and do their bit to strengthen India’s Republic and Democratic values. Various schools, communities, and organizations across the country will also celebrate highlighting India’s history and unity.

In line with the objective to increase ‘Jan Bhagidari’ in events of national importance, approximately 10,000 special guests have been invited to witness the 76th Republic Day Parade at Kartavya Path, New Delhi on January 26, 2025.
