The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an advisory in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, January 23, 2025, and have urged the authorities of several districts to prepare for the revolving risk of forest fire over the next seven days in the region.
“Very High Forest Fire Risk is likely to occur over forest areas in J&K in the next seven days. In case of emergency, dial 112,” said NDMA. Notably, these warnings will remain valid until January 31, 2025.
In a letter issued by the Kashmir Divisional Commissioner office and deputy commissioner’s office around 10 districts have been directed to make people living in fire-prone areas aware about the potential risks.
“It is crucial that everyone particularly those in fire-prone areas are made aware of the current risks and proactive measures to prevent any incidents,” the letter stated.
Further, the authorities also urged people to stay alert, avoid flames and report any sign of fire promptly. The field staff, forest workers and emergency responders were also led to be on high alert.
“Ensure that all forest staff, local authorities and emergency responders are notified and briefed on the current fire risk. They should be prepared with fire-fighting equipment and ready to take action, if necessary,” the letter further added.
Why Jammu and Kashmir Forests are Prone to Fire?
According to Irfan Rasool Wani, Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF), the alert has been sounded due to the dry conditions and low moisture levels, particularly in the Chenab valley belt.
“The forests in Kashmir currently have sufficient moisture. If the dry spell continues into March, the likelihood of fire incidents typically increases,” he added.
Last Year Fire Occurrences in Kashmir Valley
These comes after several fire occurrences that took place last year.
In December, multiple fires were reported in the Chenab Valley, causing significant damage to forested areas. The authorities have issued warnings and are urging people to stay alert, avoid open flames, and report any signs of fire immediately.
The Jammu and Kashmir’s total forest cover is 20,194 square kilometres, with 12,066 square kilometres in the Jammu area and 8,128 square kilometres in the Kashmir region. Union Territory Ladakh covers 36 square kilometres of the area.
