Farooq Abdullah’s Strong Support to the Residents
Farooq Abdullah while speaking at the event extended his strong support to the local people who protested and raised their voices against the ropeway project. He also added that the authorities of Vaishno Devi Shrine should not create difficulties for the local people and people’s interests should be given preference. Regarding this, he said “Those managing the shrine’s operations should avoid actions that harm the local population or create difficulties for them. He further criticized the construction of the ropeway not taking into account the people’s choices and highlighted that ultimate power lies with the people and not with the government. He further added that the people who live here have a lot of faith in Mata and rely on Mata’s blessings for their livelihood. But the government and the officials have just ignored all these beliefs and thought that they are superior to everyone, but the fact is that they are no. The power lies in the hands of God and he also cited the recent California incident as an example for claiming that God is above all. He further added that all faiths have similar core values and beliefs, but certain individuals misuse it for their advantage.”
Rope Way Construction
The ropeway construction between Katra town and Sanji chat was proposed by the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine board for an easy experience of the pilgrimage that could reduce the travel time of 6 to 7 hours to a maximum of one hour. The project was estimated to be about Rs 300 crores, and the plan was to inaugurate the ropeway by December 2026. According to the information received from the authorities, the ropeway could carry about 1000 passengers per hour. The Shrine board has already introduced many amenities at the Vaishno Devi temple such as a Skywalk at the temple, upgraded community kitchens, and railway registrations for the visiting pilgrims. On top of that, a modern call center has also been set up handling approximately 2500 calls from across India and abroad. Although the ropeway construction could be beneficial for the pilgrims it was a threat to the livelihood of the people who were dependent on the mere income of several services that could only function if this ropeway construction was halted such as pony services, various shops in the way to the temple. Hence people protested to halt the project and the project was halted temporarily at the last
