The US and India have been on good terms after Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister. PM Modi has traveled to many countries to attract investments and schemes that would benefit Indian people.
Recently, US President Donald Trump and Narendra Modi had a telephonic discussion after which Trump revealed that Modi plans to visit the US in February. This is the first conversation between the Indian Prime Minister and the newly sworn-in US President after Trump resumed office again.
Donald Trump stated to a news agency, “He (PM Modi) will visit the US sometime in February”. Â Modi and Trump had various other discussions in the call that they will elaborately discuss in the coming month when they meet in person. However, the date and time of the meeting have not been decided yet but there are only official confirmations of a meeting to happen soon.
Modi On Immigration
The discussion over the call between Trump and Modi also included the topic of immigration. PM Modi had said, “India will do the right thing when it comes to taking back illegal immigrants.
Trump was quoted saying this to the media. This was also one of the major reasons for Trump to again get elected as President as he promised to resolve illegal immigration in the United States. He defeated his fellow counterpart Democrat Joe Biden and was sworn in as the new President of the US on January 20th, 2025.
Modi’s Previous Visit To US
Prime Minister Modi visited the US in September last year. He came to the US for the fourth Quad Leaders’ Summit, hosted by then-President Joe Biden. This summit was also attended by fellow Quad leaders who were Anthony Albanese, of Australia and the then Prime Minister Fumio Kishida of Japan.
Adding to that, Modi also attended the ‘ Summit of the Future’ at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. As Prime Minister Modi could not attend the inauguration ceremony of Donald Trump taking the pledge as the President for the second time, External Affairs Minister Jaisankar attended the ceremony and represented the Indian government at the White House on that day.
White House on Conversation Between the Leaders
According to the White House, the conversation was mainly based on how to expand and deepen the cooperation between the two countries and also about a possible visit of Modi to the US in February According to a press release from White House “The leaders discussed plans for Prime Minister Modi to visit the White House, underscoring the strength of the friendship and strategic ties between our nations. Both leaders emphasized their commitment to advance the US-India strategic partnership and the Indo-Pacific Quad partnership, with India hosting Quad Leaders for the first time later this year.”
