Tilak Varma, the 22-year-old young cricketer had a strike rate of 130.90. He kept his calm and played the match in a calm and composed manner that made India win the game at Chepauk last Saturday.
After winning the game, Tilak Varma stood there in joy like a giant warrior of a S.S. Rajmouli Film, That is when his teammate Surya Kumar Yadav walked in and bowed at him. The whole team applauded for the man of the match letting him enjoy his moment.
Varma has already scored two centuries showing that he could be the future of T20. This time, the 72 from Tilak Varma has come with certain risks and a challenging two-paced pitch that had not been encountered even while they played in Sri Lanka.
Win that Was Not Easy
We all know that our Indian team is capable of swinging their bats to hit sixes from the very first ball of the match. But there still lies a question as to what the team will do when the grounds, they are playing in do does not allow them to freely swing their bats and force them to apply control over their bats to not lose wickets. Such grounds are common, especially in the ICC events.
Tilak Varma Gave it A Shot
Handling such situations was a bit tough for other batsmen and they could not adapt to the old style very quickly but the young Tilak, who is entirely new to the situation faced it off with brilliance. 72 runs out of 55 deliveries at the strike rate of 130.90 made India win this time.
Regarding this, he said “I know I can play both types of innings, I can hit with a good strike rate and also at 6 or 7 (an over), I can bat at a higher strike rate. That is what I have discussed with Gautam sir in the last match. He said that you can play with a good strike rate over 10 and below 10 also. When the team requires, you should be flexible and I got the chance to prove it in this game,” he added.
India Was About To Lose
India was continuously losing wickets and that too good openers like Sanju Samson, Abhishek Varma, Captain Suryakumar Yadav, Dhruv Jurel, and Hardik Pandiyawere – all out by the 10th over with not even gaining half of the runs, India was at the edge to lose. Then came Tilak Varma turning was the game changer of the day. Varma stated during the break that he would play till the end and as per the advice received from Gautam Gambir, he also said that this was time for him to show that he could play both innings.
The Game Changer
He started the game in a calculative manner and identified Jofra Archer’s pace could work in his favor on a two-paced surface So he bought out a fierce cut and played the shot on his knees and turned the ball of the fast bowler into a six.
Varma had a clear mind and would choose odd boundaries here and there for other bowlers but when Archer came in, he struck a six that made the whole stadium cheer for him and the team’s victory. Regarding this, he said “I want to take on their best bowler. It’s easier for the batsman at the other end also. So I backed myself and I took chances against him. And also whatever shots I have scored off Archer, I have worked in the nets. Mentally I was ready for that. So, it has given me a good result”.
