In the realm of social media, Instagram has emerged not only as a platform for sharing moments and building communities, but also as a troubling space where vulnerabilities of young users are exploited. A recent investigation by the Wall Street Journal sheds light on alarming trends: Predatory Followers and the Exploitation of Young Users. The report is about underage girls and adult male followers, raising serious concerns about child safety and efficacy of platform regulations. 

Predatory Followers and Dark Web Connections 

The Wall Street Journal report reveals of a disturbing trend. A preteen girl in the US started an Instagram account to pursue dance and become an influencer. Despite content moderation efforts, her account attracted mostly male followers. Ninety-two percent of these followers were grown men.

“I try to keep it girlie. I always have bows in my hair and cute stuff. Girls obviously want to see fashion inspiration and hairstyles,” she told the outlet. 

Shockingly, her photos were found circulating on the dark web and being exchanged through encrypted messaging apps such as telegram, highlighting a clandestine network exploiting young users for illicit purposes. The Instagram’s algorithms steered men with deviant sexual attraction to the girl’s page, and it was flooded with unwanted comments. 

“If you want to be an influencer and work with brands and get paid, and it all works with how many people like and engage with your post, you have to accept it,” the girl’s mother told WSJ.

Algorithmic Challenges and Platform Responsibility 

Instagram’s algorithms, designed to enhance user engagement, have come under scrutiny for potentially directing users with deviant interests towards underage content.

In 2023, The Wall Street Journal published a report highlighting that Instagram’s recommendation algorithms linked and promoted a “vast network of paedophiles” seeking illegal underage sexual content and activity. These algorithms also advertised the sale of illicit “child-sex material” on the platform, the outlet further said.  

“Pedophiles have long used the internet,” the WSJ report said. “Unlike forums or file-transfer services, Instagram’s algorithms promote these activities.” Instagram connects pedophiles and guides them to content sellers through recommendation systems.

The investigation found that Instagram allowed users to search by child-sex abuse hashtags like #pedowhore, #preteensex and #pedobait. 

Meta, Instagram’s parent company, has updated content policies and removed hashtags that sexualize children. However, the effectiveness of these measures is still questionable due to ongoing incidents.
