The recent events in Kolkata’s Tangra have unfolded into a complex and chilling case, left the police perplexed, initially shrouded in the guise of a suicide pact. Still, it’s swiftly revealing itself as a triple murder case.
The incident, marked by both tragedy within a family home and a dramatic car crash, has gripped the city, leading to a intense police investigation.
The sequence of the events
Discovery of the deceased: The bodies of Sudeshna Dey, Romi Dey, and a young girl, a daughter of one of the brothers, were discovered within their family residence in the Tangra area of Kolkata. The women were found with injuries, initially suggested to be self-inflicted wrist cuts.
The Car Crash: In the meanwhile, three male members of the same family, Pranay Dey, Prasun Dey, and Pranay’s son, were involved in a car accident. Their vehicle crashed into a Metro Rail pillar. The men survived the crash, and initially, they told police that they had attempted suicide, and that the deaths of the women in their home were also part of a pre-arranged suicide pact.
Financial Difficulties
It has emerged in the investigation that the family, who ran a tannery business, had been experiencing financial difficulties. This has become a key element of the police investigation. Police are also investigating bounced cheques and the family’s debt.
A day before the tragedy, the Deys’ factory saw unusual visitor – well-built men’ were seen outside their factory for hours, they were probably the debt collectors. That same evening, their business partner come to their house but left without getting any response. CCTV footage confirms that the brothers left the house at 12:54 am, looking visibly distressed.
Police Investigation and Contradictions
The Kolkata Police then immediately began investigating the incident, and post-mortem examinations of the deceased revealed inconsistencies with the “suicide pact” narrative. Police have recovered a paper cutter, that they believe was used in the crime.
What did the post-mortem says?
Contradictory Injuries
While the women’s bodies had wrist injuries, the post-mortem examinations revealed additional injuries that were not consistent with self-inflicted wounds. This strongly indicated that foul play was involved. Specifically, reports indicate that there were injuries other than just the wrist injuries, and that some of the injuries were not self inflicted. Reports indicate that the women had their throats slit.
Teenage girl
In the case of the young girl, there were indications that she may have been poisoned. There were reports of bruising around the mouth, and froth present.
However, reports also state that forensic experts found no traces of toxins in the women’s bodies, which adds to the mystery.
Time of death
The post-mortem reports also provided information about the approximate time of death, which is crucial for establishing the timeline of events. Reports indicate that the three were murdered within “three to six hours after they had their last meal”.
Rejection of Suicide Narrative
Police did not find any suicide note from the crime scene. Then the findings of the post-mortem reports directly contradicted the initial claims of a suicide pact, leading the police to reclassify the case as a homicide investigation.
Ongoing Investigation
The surviving male family members are under scrutiny, and once they are medically cleared, the police intend to conduct thorough interrogations. Police are also interrogating other people related to the family, including business associates. The police are also investigating the timeline of events, from when the family may have consumed a drugged dessert, to the time of the car crash.
Motive:
The police are exploring various motives, including financial difficulties and potential family disputes. It can also be considered as a possible homicide.
The Car Crash
The car crash is being investigated to determine whether it was a genuine suicide attempt or a staged event.
According to the police, the brothers left their house at midnight and the accident took place around 3.15 am on Wednesday at a place which is not far away from their place. The car covered some distance in the city, but we need to have more information regarding the vehicle’s speed, and its route. Kolkata Police found that the vehicle had no “mechanical glitch” that led to the accident near Abhisikta Metro in the southern part of the city, the officer said.
What will be the next step for police?
As the investigation is still going on, it is hard to draw the conclusion right now. But Kolkata police is suspecting the two brothers for murder of the family. Kolkata police likely to continue interrogating the brothers. Their continuous change in answers also seem suspicious to the police.
The Impact
The incident has sent shockwaves through Kolkata, raising questions about the circumstances that led to such a tragic outcome. The case highlights the complexities of family dynamics, the pressures of financial hardship, and the importance of thorough police investigation.
The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected to emerge as the police continue their work.
