DMRC said repairs were being carried out during non-peak hours. However, if the issue is not resolved within this timeframe, restoration work will be undertaken after passenger services conclude. A police officer from the Metro Unit confirmed that a complaint had been received and an investigation has been launched into the matter.

Services on the entire Delhi Metro’s Red Line had been affected due to a cable theft incident, a Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) official said. DMRC said repairs were being carried out during non-peak hours. However, if the issue is not resolved within this timeframe, restoration work will be undertaken after passenger services conclude tonight.

“Services are impacted on the Red Line since morning due to another incident of cable theft. The inconvenience caused to the passengers due to such incidents of cable thefts is deeply regretted.

DMRC is in touch with the law-and-order machinery to resolve such recurring issues. Attempts shall be made to repair the impacted section during non-peak hours. However, in case that doesn’t materialize, the restoration work shall be taken up after the conclusion of passenger services,” DMRC posted on X.

A police officer from the Metro Unit confirmed that a complaint has been received, and an investigation has been launched into the matter.

The corporation added that it is coordinating with law enforcement agencies to address these recurring issues.

In December, a similar incident occurred on the Blue Line, causing a seven-hour delay in train operations due to cable theft. The alleged theft took place between the Kirti Nagar and Moti Nagar metro stations.

On December 5, at around 5 am, the DMRC had got an alert from the signaling department, informing them of an issue with the track circuits. On investigating the matter, the officials found that a 140-metre-long signaling cable was missing. A signaling cable helps in tracking the movement of the trains.

The thieves used an old-school method, with ropes and hooks, to climb the pillars and step onto the elevated track. They then cut the signalling cables. The track which they targeted lay on one of Delhi Metro’s busiest tracks, Blue Line.

Then, Five people – Rashid Malik (26), Shahrukh Malik (29), Ramzan (32), and Junaid aka Bhura (32), were arrested, while seven others – Faisal, Masoom, Nadeem, Siddhu, Teli, Sarfaraj and Islam – were absconding. Services were disrupted on the morning of December 5 after a gang of thieves stole signaling cables.

A report detailed the method that the gang employed to steal the cables and render the services ineffective. The gang first tried to locate a Delhi Metro pillar in an isolated and dark area each night for months. They wanted to steal copper wire from the tracks due to its high scrap value.
