Two Danish Tourists Start a Cleanliness Campaign in Sikkimโ€™s Yumthang Valley

Read Later

Two Danish tourists were seen sweeping garbage at the picturesque Yumthang Valley of North Sikkim. This inspired other fellow visitors and locals to do the same by lending their helping hand to their cleanliness campaign.

Yumthang Valley, also known as the โ€œValley of Flowers,โ€ is well known for its stunning rhododendron flowers and peaceful surroundings. Thousands of tourists visit the site every year. The valley, in recent years, has witnessed the negative impact of increased tourists, including litter and deterioration of the environment.

Seeing the littering of garbage around the serene place encouraged these tourists to take action. Many other tourists saw them collecting polythene, plastic cups and other wasteful items in a polythene bag, which encouraged them to move towards joining the movement that soon gained among locals. Locals were surprised and also embarrassed to see the tourists cleaning the garbage.

Gaining the publicโ€™s attention

Days went by, and the video became viral on all the social media websites and gained a huge number of followers. There were certain users who were proud of what the Denmark Tourists had done, and there were others who were ashamed and expected the government and the concerned authorities to keep the place clean.

This project illustrates the way all travelers can do their bit to preserve the beauty of nature by restricting plastic use and not littering all over the place. But at the same time, it is also required from the local people and government that they remain dedicated to keeping their respective areas tidy.

Dedication by the Danish tourists is also a wonderful reminder that sometimes one does not have to do big things, and small things can make a very big difference. Their action not only contributed to the cleaning of Yumthang Valley but also created awareness about environmental protection, encouraging others to do the same. The peopleโ€™s positive response towards them further highlights the power of change that is brought about at peopleโ€™s level and raises the desire to further the awareness in conserving nature and ecosystem. If every visitor simply took one minute to honor and conserve the environment, the beauty of the places can be preserved for generations.
