    ‘Despicable Me’: The First Animated Franchise to Cross $5 Billion

    Despicable Me made history by becoming the first animated movie franchise to earn more than $5 billion at the box office.

    Despicable Me 2010 was the first franchise of the animated movie series. It includes six movies till date and two spinoffs – Minions (2015) and Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022). 

    Despicable Me 4 has pushed the franchise into box office record-breaking territory by earning $88 million in the past weekend. By achieving $5 billion, it has surpassed the Shrek series, which had previously earned $4.2 billion at the box office.

    Only 15 movie series have achieved $5 billion at the box office, which includes Avatar, Transformers, Jurassic Park and the Avengers series. Despicable Me is the only animated series to enter the club. 

    The movie series has made ripples, with its first movies itself with Steve Carell, the Golden Globe Award winner actor and comedian.

    Steve Carell gives voice to the role of the villainous Gru, who is on a mission to steal the moon with his adopted three daughters. 

    The recent fourth part of the movie series is about Gru and his family about to welcome Gru Jr., a new member in the family.

    The little one causes a lot of chaos in the family. At the same time, villain Maxime Le Mal escapes the prison and wants to take revenge on Gru.  

    With its stellar cast of Will Ferrell, Stephen Colbert, Chloe Fineman, Joey King, Kristen Wiig, Steve Coogan and Sofia Vergara, the movie captured fans’ attention.

    First Part: Despicable Me (2010)

    Directed by Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud and produced by Illumination Entertainment, the first part of Despicable Me portrays the story of Gru, as a supervillain.

    He adopts three daughters to be part of his great scheme to steal the moon. After balancing his villainous plans with fatherhood, Gru’s life completely takes an unexpected turn.

    The first part of the movie also introduced the popular small yellow minions. 

    Second Part: Despicable Me 2 (2013)

    After being a dedicated father, Gru left his career as a villain. However, Gru is pulled back and his life is about to get a lot more exciting when a spy agency recruits him to stop a new threat.

    The new threat was to track down a stolen mutagen that threatens the world for the Anti-Villain League or AVL.

    During the mission, Gru falls for secret agent Lucy Wilde, voiced by Kristin Wiig, and they get married in the end. 

    Third Part: Despicable Me 3 (2017)

    The third part of the movie starts with Gru, Lucy and their adorable daughters Margo, Edith and Agnes.

    Gru, Lucy lives their exciting lives as secret agents, only get to be fired because not able to stop the former child star and current supervillain, Balthazar Bratt.

    Meanwhile, Gru is reunited with his long-lost twin brother, Dru who has his own ambition to be a supervillain

    Fourth Part: Despicable Me 4 (2024)

    The infamous and kind-hearted not-so-super villain Gru returns in part 4. Gru and Lucy have now become parents to their son, Gru Jr.

    The movie will also showcase Gru juggling life with a new kid. Gru cannot easily connect with new kid and his showdown with a rival from his past, Maxime Le Mal.
