Record-Setting Athletes Ready for Paris 2024
The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris may be over, but Paralympians are set to return to competition soon. This time India will provide more athletes than ever. In the session of the Paralympics, India will be competing in 12 of the 22 sports with 84 athletes participating. India will be participating in three new sports: blind judo, para-rowing, as well as para-cycling.
India’s most successful Paralympic Games was in Tokyo 2020. The nation took home 19 medals, including five gold, eight silver, and six bronze.
One of them is Sumit Antil; a medalist of the Tokyo Paralympics and whose javelin throw stirred up keen interest. Having created records in the past, Sumit Antil aims at doing it again. A committed Antil has trained hard to seek strength before the Paralympics in Paris this year in the Men’s F64.
Avani Lekhara, who tied the world record in the women’s R2 10m air rifle standing SH1 event in Tokyo 2020 to win gold, will also compete in the Paralympics in Paris in 2024. In Tokyo, she became the first Indian woman to win a gold medal at the Paralympic Games.
Bhavina Patel, a table tennis player, will participate in the women’s singles and doubles classes at Paris 2024 with Sonal ben Patel.
In the men’s C2 paracycling event, nation’s hope is on Arshad Shaik and in the women’s C2 event, Jyoti Gaderiya will be participating. Blind judo event participant: Men – 60kg J1 – Kapil Parmar Kokila, a competitive from the women’s 48kg J2 division will be joining Parmar. Anita and K. Narayana will represent India in the mixed doubles sculls category for PR3 in the para rowing event.
In the ST category, men’s detailed recurve open and mixed team recurve open will be on display by Harvinder Singh who some few months ago created history as the first Indian to be win medal in archery.
