August 23, 2024, is the day when India is celebrating its first-ever “National Space Day.” This day salutes the country’s historic feat of Vikram Lander from Chandrayaan-3 land successfully at the Moon’s south pole in 2023.
Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi named the point, as “Shiv Shakti” and declared August 23 as the National Space Day. This day also marks the first anniversary of Chandrayaan-3 landing.
Origin of ‘National Space Day’
The Indian government officially designated August 23 as Nation Space Day to recognize nation’s noteworthy accomplishment. This also highlights India’s increasing expertise in space exploration and the crucial role of space science and technology in country’s progress.
Launched from Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh’s Satish Dhawan Space Centre, the Chandrayaan-3 mission successfully completed Vikram Lander’s soft landing on Moon’s surface. This landmark event marked a historic milestone for India. India became the first nation to ever land on Moon’s south pole and fourth country nationwide to successfully land on the moon.
Celebrations of National Space Day
The theme of National Space Day is “Touching Lives while Touching the Moon: India’s Space Saga.” It will be celebrated for two days with a range of activities. There will be exhibitions and lectures. In addition, mobile exhibitions titled “Space on Wheels” will go to colleges, schools and institutions to provide educational insights into space. The events will showcase India’s space endeavors.
Furthermore, ISRO has also introduced new initiatives, called Space Tutors. The program aims to provide useful learning opportunities from ISRO-affiliated mentors.
