    “I had only one dream…” Shikhar Dhawan on Retirement from Cricket

    India’s renowned opening batsman, Shikhar Dhawan has officially announced his retirement from both domestic and international cricket. He took to his social media handles to convey this news, in which he expressed his gratitude and reflection on his career. “As I close this chapter of my cricketing journey, I carry with me countless memories and gratitude. Thank you for the love and support! Jai Hind! 

    Dhawan made his last appearance during the ODI series against Bangladesh in 2022. He opened about his decision, stating that it wasn’t difficult for him, yet the decision was quite emotional.

    Dhawan first rose gained attention during the 2004 U-19 World Cup, scoring 505 runs and three hundreds. He was among the important members of Delhi’s potent batting lineup, alongside Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag. He is renowned for his offside play, cover drives and cuts. In 2019, he made his ODI debut for India against Australia.

    India’s opener batsman ended the span of his 13 years career cricket, where he played 34 Test, 167 ODIs and 68 T20s, accumulating 2315, 6793 and 1579 runs respectively.  

    Dhawan shared his video on Instagram stating, “It’s important to turn the page to move forward in a story, and in life. That’s why I am announcing my retirement from international and domestic cricket. I’ve told myself to not to feel sad that you won’t play for India again but feel happy that you played for the country.” 

    He further added, “I only had one dream and that was to play for India, and I even achieved that.” 

    Dhawan’s final competitive performance was in the IPL 2024, where he captained the Punjab Kings. He also led India as captain, in several limited-overs series, substituting regular captains when they needed rest.

    Over his career, Dhawan scored 24 international centuries. He was especially good in multi-team competitions, like the Asia Cup, Champions Trophy and 2015 World Cup. In a 2023 Test match against Australia, his remarkable 85-ball century remains the fastest century.

    Fans expressed their sentiments and grief through social media platforms. Some cheered the cricketer, while others thanked him for giving them great cricket memories. While many others showed their sorrow upon seeing their favorite player, announcing the shocking news.

    “The streets of India will forever remember your incredible impact on Indian cricket, especially your contribution in ICC tournaments. Thankyou Gabbar, for the unforgettable memories! All the best for your second inning of life,” commented by another user.

    Reactions from Fellow Cricketers 

    Many fellow cricketers also expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Shikhar Dhawan, honoring his contribution to the game till now.  

    Dhawan also stated that retirement won’t lessen his fame. His supporters will always love him, even if he is no longer playing cricket. He further extends his gratefulness to his parents, fans and his childhood coaches from various matches and his IPL teams that he has played for.
