The BCCI (Board of Cricket Council in India) has announced plans to transform Green Park Stadium into a Test Centre. This decision comes after the safety concerns of the venue and ensure better facilities and safety for the players. These concerns were highlighted following an inspection by the Uttar Pradesh Public Works Department and the State officials, which was deemed to be unsafe for fans.
The second test match between India and Bangladesh is currently underway at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur.
Green Park Stadium facing ‘Structural Concerns’
The Green Park Stadium in Kanpur, one of the earliest test centers, known for conducting international matches, has been facing several structural concerns in the last few days.
Initially, there were several delays in conducting matches due to wet outfield conditions. However, recently there have been some safety concerns raised about the stadium, forcing officials to limit ticket sales for one of the stands.
Notably, the Uttar Pradesh Public Works Department has deemed the Balcony C stand unsafe to hold full-capacity crowds due to structural issues. On Thursday, the government engineers after a thorough inspection said that the Balcony C stand may not be able to withstand the weight of its 4,800-person capacity.
The PWD recommended the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association to lower the number of tickets sold for the stand after reviewing the setup for six hours. As a result, there will be only 1700 tickets which will be made available for the C section.
BCCI Considering Newer Venues
These uncertain conditions may lead to a struggle for the Green Park Stadium to find another international fixture in the foreseeable future. As the BCCI (Board of Cricket Council India) is unsure of the hosting capabilities of the venue.
It has been determined that the senior players were already reluctant to play at the Venue.
The BCCI has also expressed its concerns about the stadium and is considering more matches to newer venues as the venue for international fixtures is uncertain.
The newly built Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow has now emerged as the state’s most premium venue to hold cricket matches, with better facilities and infrastructure. The venue is expected to be in Varanasi next year 2025. This move is expected to be critical for the Green Park Stadium to host another international match in the future.
Additionally, a BCCI source has also revealed that there were concerns raised by Indian team management about the venue. They prefer to play in Lucknow, which has better facilities. This match was awarded to the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association as per rotation and since Green Park has been declared a Test Centre by BCCI, the association has decided to host the match in Kanpur.
