The prime suspect in Amethi killings, identified as Chandan Verma, posted a WhatsApp status before committing the ruthless crime. He posted his “clear intentions” on his WhatsApp status.
The status read, “Five people are going to die; I will show you soon”.
On Thursday, Chandan shot Sunil Kumar and his entire family. According to the police, the accused intended to shoot himself after killing the family of four. “He was the fifth person, but his suicide attempt failed,” the police said.
Amethi Killings
On October 3rd, 2024, a family residing in Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi was shot dead by some unidentified men at their home. The deceased were identified as Sunil Kumar (a government school teacher), his wife Poonam, and their two daughters, aged 5 and 2. The family was living on rent, near the Ahrowa Bhavani crossing. As reported by Amethi police, some armed men intruded in the teacher’s house, opened fire on the family, and left the scene.
However, the case got a lead, and a man named, Chandan Verma was held as a prime suspect. Investigators alleged Verma had an affair of 18 months with Poonam, the teacher’s wife. Verma would often video chat with her, which Sunil came to know about. On August 18, 2024, Sunil secretly made Poonam file a complaint against Chandan under SC/ST Act in Raebareli. The complaint read that if any member of Poonam’s family suffered harm, Chandan should be held responsible for it.
According to the police statement, “Chandan shot the teacher three times Poonam twice, and their daughters once each. He possibly used a .32 bore countrymade pistol.”

In an attempt to escape, Verma managed to grab a revolver from an inspector and opened fire at them. The incident occurred near the forest of Piure Vindhya Diwan Canal Track in the Mohanganj police station area.
Amethi Superintendent of Police Anoop Singh said, “Verma snatched the revolver from inspector Madan Verma and tried to attack other policemen when the former was shot in his right leg.” He said that police were compelled to shoot him in the leg, otherwise, he would have shot them and escaped. “Verma has been sent to the Tiloi Community Health Centre,” he further added.
