Prime Minister Narendra Modi completed his 23 years in public office on Monday, October 7, 2024. He commenced his journey in 2001 by becoming the Chief Minister of Gujrat. He maintained his position until 2014 before he was appointed the Prime Minister of India.

Marking his tenure, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the achievements of the last 23 years. “Much has been achieved over the years but there is still more to be done. The learnings over these 23 years enabled us to come with pioneering initiatives, which have made an impact both nationally and globally,” he added.

He assured the people that he will continue to work tirelessly for them. “I will not rest till our collective goal of viksit bharat is realized,” said the PM.

Further, PM Modi also thanked BJP (Bhartiya Janta Party) for promoting him from a ‘humble karyakarta’ to the Chief Minister of Gujrat. He also recalled the challenges he faced, including the “2001 Kutch earthquake, a super cyclone, a massive draught and the opposition’s misrule” after taking responsibility for the nation.

“Powered by Jana Shakti, we rebuilt Gujarat and propelled it to new heights of success even in sectors like Agriculture, for which the state was not traditionally known,” said PM Modi.

While reiterating his achievements, PM Modi outlined that with over 25 crore people freed from poverty, India has been emerging as the fifth largest economy. The world is keen to engage us, invest in our people, and be a part of our success. At the time, India is currently working extensively to overcome global challenges be it climate change, improving healthcare, realizing SDG, and more,” he asserted.

PM Modi’s Contributions in the Past 23 Years

Additionally, during his tenure, PM Narendra Modi has been recognized for his significant contributions that led to the socio-economic growth and infrastructure development in Gujrat. His leadership has been marked by significant initiatives which later scaled up to become national programs. These programs were the Jal Jeevan Mission and the Saubhagya Scheme. Initially, these were known as Jyotigram Yojana (electrification) and Sujalam-Sufalam Yojana (water).

Modi’s governance approach, especially in areas related to socio-reforms, infrastructure, sanitation, and environmental conservation has shaped the nation’s policies.

He has also pioneered the governance model based on economic growth, infrastructure, urbanization, and social welfare as the Chief Minister of Gujarat. This was the ‘Gujarat Model’. It was one of the key initiatives that led to the replication of the state at the national level when Modi was appointed as the PM in 2014.

Here are Some Components of the Gujarat Model

    • Economic Growth and Industrialization: The key initiatives involve the Vibrant Gujrat Summit in 2003 attracting global investments and Pro-Business Policies, to attract more businesses for domestic and international investments.
    • Infrastructure Development: Jyotigram Yojana, ensuring 24-hour electricity to rural areas and improving the agriculture sector. Road and port development for improving road connectivity and enhancing trade and commerce.
    • Water Management: Sujalam Sufalam Yojana is a program that includes the construction of canals, and check dams and reservoirs. Jal Mandir initially focused on restoring traditional water bodies to facilitate water supply.
    • Social Welfare Programs: Nirmal Gujrat, a sanitation campaign for improving public health and Health and Education services to facilitate the state.
