Yogi Government Brings Stringent Law Against Food Adulteration

    Read Later

Recently the Yogi government in Uttar Pradesh, convened a crucial meeting to implement severe sanctions regarding food adulteration. The meeting enforced strict penalties for incidents involving spitting in food or providing spit-contaminated food. The two new ordinances that the state intends to enact are: “UP Prevention of Contamination in Food (Consumer Right to Know) Ordinance 2024” and the “Prevention of Pseudo and Anti-Harmony Activities and Prohibition of Spitting Ordinance 2024.”

During this meeting, it was decided that the proposed regulations would also give authorities the power to take decisive action if it is found that an employee of the food establishment is an “illegal foreign citizen”, meaning a foreign national is staying illegally in India.

What Did the Yogi Government Said?

A senior government official stated to The Indian Express, “There have been alarming cases of food adulteration recently. This includes the contamination of items like juice, dal, and roti with human waste and other inedible, filthy substances.” These incidents are concerning and pose serious health risks to the general public. They also threaten social harmony. Such behavior is completely “intolerable.” To stop these occurrences permanently, the administration has decided to enact stringent legislation.

He further added at the meeting, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath mandated that this decree should ensure the trust of consumers and the purity of food items at all food outlets, including street vendors.

Another official stated, “It has been decided to make provisions of imprisonment and fine against those who violate the law and that action should be taken under the proposed law by considering such crime as cognizable and non-bailable.”

    What are the New Provisions?

The sources directed that the CM’s new provisions also ensure that no anti-social element will be able to hide identity and adulterate food items and beverages.

    Mandatory Displays of Details

    • The CM underlined that every consumer has the right to access vital information about the vendors of the food items they consume. Thus, business owners must display a signboard with their names prominently.
    • He further asserted that all employees working in food outlets must wear identity cards. According to the announcement, individuals who use pseudonyms or give false information should face strict consequences.

    CCTV Installation

    • The CM also directed that every restaurant must install enough CCTV cameras for continuous monitoring of the dining and kitchen areas. He also added that the footage should be retained for at least a month and be easily accessible if the district administration requests it.

    Other Rules

    • Other provisions include the compulsion to cover the head, and wear a mask, and gloves when preparing and serving food in the restaurant.
    • The food business operator must provide the details of the employees working to the department concerned. Furthermore, if anyone is found to be an illegal foreign national or an intruder, they will face harsh consequences.

This move by the UP government reflects their dedication to upholding the consumer’s rights and maintaining food safety. However, as a responsible citizen, it is our duty not to indulge in such filthy practices
