    Read Later

A layer of toxic foam- a mixture of sewage and Industrial waste was observed floating on the Yamuna River in Delhi on Friday. As the festive season approaches, this thick layer of white froth, which was reportedly observed at Kalindi Kunj, Delhi has been a focal point for the people.

Yamuna Froth: A Serious Concern to Human Life and Wildlife

It has been significantly raising concerns about the potential health hazards for humans and other living organisms, especially wildlife and aquatic life.

The videos are creating a buzz on various social media platforms, gaining shocking reactions from audiences over this river frothing. These toxic white foams, resembling clouds over the water, gradually disappear as the day ends.

According to the sources, this foam is primarily caused by high levels of ammonia and phosphates from Industrial pollutants and untreated sewage. This alarming situation has been a matter of discussion. As it poses risks to people who use the river water for religious purposes. These pollutants pose significant health risks, including respiratory and skin problems.

    Buzz on Social Media

In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter) earlier on Friday, October 18, 2024, netizens were seen expressing their displeasure with the government and authorities for not taking necessary actions against these effluents. Some People even trolled the ruling Aam Aadmi Party and its leader Arvind Kejriwal in a sarcastic way for not taking any action against these issues.

“Heaven has descended on earth on the banks of Yamuna in Delhi. To defame good work done by Kejriwal ji in last 10 years, Haters will say that this is poisonous foam, not cloud,” a user added.

“Intzar hai ki kab Arvind Kejriwal kahega ki BJP valo ne Yamuna ji mei shampoo ghol diya,” a user stated.

“Not seen this froth disappear in last 35 years. No one does anything to fix these effluents,” another user responded, citing it as a long-standing concern.

AAP Ensures Active Measures Against the River Situation

Meanwhile, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party said that the government is closely watching the situation. It said that the officials have already begun sprinkling defoamers to tackle the situation. The party further assured that the government is taking active steps to resolve the situation.

    According to Experts

Experts have warned that there may be major health dangers associated with the river froth. Bhim Singh Rawat, Associate Coordinator of the South Asia Network on Dams, Rivers, and People commented on the frothing conditions this year. “Normally, the upper segment of the Yamuna experiences significant flood spells. But this year, there have been none during the just-concluded southwest monsoon of 2024. This is unusual, as the river generally witnesses at least a couple of low or medium flood spells in this segment every year,” he said.

Rawat further highlighted that pollution is a major issue that affects both humans and wildlife, in the areas surrounded by the Yamuna River. Although the river has a cleaning capacity to clean the impurities itself. The pollution levels have now risen to an alarming stage. The appearance of white foam around festival times highlights the issue, he explained.
