Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Kazan, on Tuesday 22nd October 2024 to attend the much-awaited BRICS Summit 2024. Russian President Vladimir Putin pleasantly welcomed PM Modi. Hours before the BRICS Summit PM Modi engaged in a bilateral meeting, that occurred on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit.
PM Modi and Putin’s Bilateral Talks
During PM Modi and Putin’s bilateral talks, Indian leader expressed India’s cooperation in resolving the Russia-Ukraine tensions peacefully. The Prime Minister restressed that the Russia-Ukraine conflict should be settled through diplomatic means.
PM Modi also noted that this is his second trip to Russia in the last three months. This demonstrates the “deep trust” and “close coordination” between the two nations.
Words of PM Modi During the Meeting
- PM Modi extended his heartfelt pleasure to the India-Russia friendship. During the meeting PM Modi said, “The opening of India’s new consulate in Kazan will further strengthen these ties.”
- PM Modi also underlined that the annual summit in Moscow in July, build the two nations’ cooperation across several fields. Over the 15 years, BRICS created a lasting image, which many countries of the world want to be part of.
- During the meeting, PM Modi also added, “I have been in constant touch with you on the subject of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. As I have said earlier, we believe that the problems should be resolved in a peaceful manner. We fully support the early establishment of peace and stability. All our efforts give priority to humanity. India is ready to provide all possible cooperation in the times to come.”
Words of President Putin During the Meeting
President Putin thanked PM Modi for accepting the BRICS Summit invitation. Putin also remembered their July meeting and the issues they talked about. He also talked about the conversation India and Russia had over the telephone.
- President Putin said that the upcoming Intergovernmental Commission is set for 12th December 2024 in New Delhi. Putin further underlined the ongoing development projects and supports India’s decision to open the National Institute of Indian Studies in Kazan. He also added that India’s policies will further enrich the two nations’ cooperation.
What is BRICS Summit?
The BRICS Summit 2024 is hosted by President Putin and includes nations like Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The summit is three days long and is said to be the largest meeting as all the powerful leaders gather together.
The group first gathered in 2006 and transitioned to BRICS with South Africa’s inclusion in 2004. The meeting occurs once every year, where economic and political discussions take place.
