The 30-year-long struggle continues as M23 captures Goma again. Civilians are scared as they face rebellion and army clashes, while the embassies of France, the US, and Rwanda are attacked.
Revoking of the conflict
The city of Goma was taken over following explosions and gunfire linked to the M23 . Residents shared videos depicting the rebels in military attire as they patrolled the streets.
These defending troops surrendered and released their weapons after the threats.
There were gunfires in parts of the city as M23 declared Goma to be Liberated and advised to remain calm.
The Battle
The accession of the key city of Goma has started a serious struggle between theCongolesegovernment and the Rebel troops (backed by Rwanda, says the UN). The DRCs stance is that theCongolesearmy has 80% of control over the city’s parts and troops are only bound to the outskirts of the city.
Unfortunately, there are victims whose bodies lie in the streets.
Attacks on foreign embassies
There have been attacks on Kenyan, Ugandan, andSouth Africanembassies. The Kinshasa city police had to fire tear gas on the protestors after the attacks on the embassy. These protestors mainly targeted the embassies of France, The United States, and Rwanda. The Ugandan Embassy was looted, seen by a reporter for Reuters. There was a fire at the French embassy in Kinshasa as shared by Foreign Minister Jean Noel Barrot.
Charge on Rwanda
What Rwanda is doing is complicity with France, Belgium, the United States, and others. The people of Congo are tired. How many times should we die?”
A Goma man reported to the same news agency that he saw men in Rwandan army uniforms.
The UN and DRC government claim Rwanda to be behind the rebel troops, helping with soldiers and weapons.
