World Wildlife Day is an international day celebrated on March 3, every year, under the auspices of the United Nations. The celebration is aimed to raise awareness and concern for the conservation of wildlife around the world and preventing their extinction.

Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, has also reiterated the commitment to protect and preserve the incredible biodiversity of our planet on the occasion of World Wildlife Day. In a post on X, he said:

“Today, on #WorldWildlifeDay, let’s reiterate our commitment to protect and preserve the incredible biodiversity of our planet. Every species plays a vital role—let’s safeguard their future for generations to come! We also take pride in India’s contributions towards preserving and protecting wildlife.”

Mr Modi also shared: “This morning, on World Wildlife Day, I went on a Safari in Gir, which, as we all know, is home to the majestic Asiatic Lion; Coming to Gir also brings back many memories of the work we collectively did when I was serving as Gujarat CM.

In the last many years, collective efforts have ensured that the population of Asiatic Lions is rising steadily; Equally commendable is the role of tribal communities and women from surrounding areas in preserving the habitat of the Asiatic Lion. He also urged all others to visit Gir in the future.” There, PM Modi also clicked some rare pics of lions and lionesses.

The Prime Minister also remarked that over the last decade, the population of tigers, leopards, rhinos have risen too, indicating how deeply people cherish wildlife and are working to build sustainable habitats for animals.

The Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 is an Act of the Parliament of India enacted for the protection of plants and animal species. Before 1972, India had only five designated national parks.

This year in 2025, ” Wildlife Conservation Finance: Investing in People and Planet ” is the theme for World Wildlife Day. It emphasizes the critical need for innovative financial solutions to support conservation projects while recognizing the indispensable role of wildlife in sustaining ecosystems, economies, and human well-being.

Every year, this ‘Day’ is celebrated enthusiastically to spread awareness about the importance of flora and fauna, as it provides food, clean air, and a healthy environment. Thus, wildlife is essential to preserve the balance of nature.

    Protecting Our Flora and Fauna

This day motivates people to take action to protect wildlife which is significant to keep different animals and plants alive. Hence, humans should do their activities in such a way that does not harm the natural environment.

Historically, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) decided to proclaim 3rd March as a World Wildlife Day to raise awareness of the world’s wild flora and fauna. On December 20, 2013, the Sixty-eight session of the UNGA decided to celebrate World Wildlife Day. The date is the day of the adoption of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna & Flora which is also known as CITIES In 1973. The CITIES resolution was sponsored by Thailand.

United Nations Organizations in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITIES) facilitate the implementation of World Wildlife Day. In addition, CITIES has 183 member states and it is one of the world’s most influential tools for biodiversity conservation through the regulation of trade in flora and fauna.

In fact, this day raises awareness about endangered species and their protection; encourages conservation efforts to preserve biodiversity; supports sustainable practices to prevent habitat destruction and illegal wildlife trade; and highlights the importance of ecosystems in maintaining environmental balance.
