The long-awaited Indo-Japanese animated film, ‘Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama’ has been postponed, leaving fans disappointed as they awaited its theatrical release after 31 years. Originally scheduled for October 18 in 4K format, the new release date is yet to be announced.
Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama is a unique collaboration between Japanese filmmaker Yugo Sako and Indian filmmaker Ram Mohan. Released in 1993, the film features prominent voice actors such as Arun Govil as Lord Ram, Namrata Sawney as Mata Sita, and the late Amrish Puri as Raavan. The narrative is provided by the well-known actor and politician Shatrughan Sinha.
Although it was screened at the 24th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in 1993, the film did not have a broad theatrical release at the time. It gained popularity when re-televised on Indian channels in the early 2000s, creating a lasting impression on audiences.
The films distribution in India is by Geek Pictures India, in collaboration with AA Films and Excel Entertainment. The announcement regarding the release was announced via a letter on their official Instagram page. The statement explained that the postponement was a response to the overwhelming excitement of fans nationwide. The postponement highlights the importance of maximizing the films exposure and allowing more audiences to experience this beloved adaption of the epic.
The movie stands out as a unique collaboration of Japanese and Indian storytelling traditions. It explores themes of friendship and cultural exchange, making it an important piece of art. Geek Pictures India stated, “We are honored to present this cultural artifact from Japan to its spiritual home.” This highlights the film’s aim to connect different cultures.
Moreover, the choice to create an animated version arose from previous critiques. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad raised concerns, leading the producers to clarify misunderstandings and develop an adaptation that honors the original story while resonating with the Indian audience.
Upon its release, “Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama” will be available in multiple languages, including Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu, in addition to the English version. This multilingual approach allows the film to reach a wider audience who can enjoy the film, making it accessible to various linguistic communities throughout India.
