Elephant Mourns her friend’s Death in Russia

Russia A very heart-wrenching web video has witnessed a retired Russian circus elephant weeping upon the demise of her life-long companion. The viral web video shows Magda, who is an old performing elephant, refusing to leave the body of her life-long companion Jenny.

Jenny and Magda had shared over two decades of life together in a roaming circus, developing a close and unbreakable bond. Tragedy befell the pair this week when Jenny collapsed and died. Witnesses told of how Magda seemed to be heartbroken, standing next to Jenny’s lifeless body for hours, refusing to allow veterinarians or handlers to approach her.

Desperate Attempts to Wake Her Friend

Russian news portal Baza says that Magda initially attempts to shove Jenny’s body as if waking her up. “In the first minutes of the tragedy, she was pushing her friend gently and was trying to lift her, then hugged her,” Baza cited.

The sad video is of Magda gingerly touching Jenny with her foot and trunk, apparently begging her to respond. When there was no response, she slowly traversed her trunk over Jenny’s body, appearing to say goodbye to her.

The video clip has been viewed over four million times on X (formerly Twitter) and also moved millions of people around the globe, leaving them in tears. The viewers have responded to the sorrows with some of them pointing out how the elephants, like humans, have a huge sense of loss and mourning.

Elephants and Their Mourning Rituals

Scientists who study elephants have been documenting for some time now their mourning ceremonies, with certain elephants mourning their deceased herd members by touching, prodding, or even lying beside the corpse for hours. Some even cover the body with leaves or earth. Magda’s response is another vivid reminder of how much emotions these intelligent animals carry.

Animal welfare agencies also portrayed this case as an example of how profound elephant emotions are, particularly those that have spent their entire lifetime in captivity. “Elephants form long-term bonds, and when they lose a friend, the depression is real and profound,” was quoted by a wildlife organization spokesperson. As Magda gradually comes to terms with her loss, her caretakers are watching her closely, making sure she is being provided with emotional support in this trying moment. Specialists point out that, as with human beings, elephants too need time to understand grief, and then Magda’s emotional destiny will decide her overall health.

This sorrowful landscape is a harsh reminder of how deeply animals connect and how needful they are to be respected and shown mercy.
