Legendary Tabla master, Zakir Hussain bid farewell from the universe, leaving the nation in mourning. The musician took his last breath at a hospital in San Francisco. Master Zakir was 73 and passed due to lung-related complications.
What Caused the Death of Zakir Hussain?
Zakir Hussain was hospitalized from the last weeks. Following his worsening condition, he was later shifted to the ICU. Initially, his death news broke out on Sunday night, but were denied by her sister stating, “he is alive, but his condition is very critical.” However, few hours later the family confirmed his death.
Hussain’s family issued a statement, revealing details about the cause of the death. They said that he died of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a chronic disease affecting the lungs.
As per the reports of The Hindustan Times, the family said, “His prolific work as a teacher, mentor and educator has left an indelible mark on countless musicians. He hoped to inspire the next generation to go further. He leaves behind an unparalleled legacy as a cultural ambassador and one of the greatest musicians of all time.” The family also requested for ‘privacy at this time.’

The Indian Consulate in San Francisco expressed grief on the death of Hussain, stating that the musician’s legacy will live on through his music and the lives he influenced. “The son of legendary Tabla maestro Ustad Allarakha, Ustad Zakir Hussain is known for his unparalleled mastery of Tabla and his innovative contributions to music have touched the hearts of countless individuals around the world,” the Consulate added in their statement.
