Following the sparked controversies between two cricketing legends, Vinod Kambli and Sachin Tendulkar’s reunion after years, former cricketer Vinod Kambli has now opened up about his health and long-standing friendship with his childhood mate Sachin Tendulkar.
Speaking in a recent interview with Vickey Lalwani, Kambli revealed that he has been battling with a severe urinary infection, which led to his collapse a month ago. The former cricketer said that his family, including his wife Andrea, son Jesus Cristiano, and daughter Johanna, played a crucial role in his recovery.
“I am better now. My wife takes care of me a lot. She took me to three different hospitals and told me, ‘You have to get fit. My son picked me up when I collapsed. And my daughter and wife stood by me throughout. The doctor told me to get admitted,” he added.
Despite facing major setbacks, Vinod Kambli revealed that he is determined to recover fully. “I am ready to go to rehab. I want to go there because I don’t fear anything. My family is with me,” he shared while expressing his gratitude for their unwavering support.
About Vinod Kambli’s Health Issues
Lack of fitness and health issues are the major issues that led to Kambli’s decline in his cricketing career. His addiction to alcohol was also among the main reasons that has severely impacted him. His recent appearance at the memorial of the iconic cricket coach Achrekar witnessed the health challenges the former cricketer has been going through over the years.
Reunion with Sachin Tendulkar
His emotional reunion with his long-term mate Sachin Tendulkar was also observed during the event, though the two of them couldn’t spend some time together due to professional commitments, but it has ignited a lot of curiosity among fans over the internet.
The fans were seen disappointed after a video clip had gone viral on the internet. The clip showed Kambli insisting Sachin to sit with him, the moment he recognises him. But Tendulkar seemed to be in a rush and had to leave.
Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli’s Friendship
Notably, Kambli and Tendulkar’s infamous duo has forged a world record of 664 runs in a school match in 1988, after which they both went on to represent India globally. However, their relationship hit a rough patch in 2009, after Kambli revealed in a public statement that Sachin could have done more to help him during his struggles.
Now while addressing those remarks after 15 years, Kambli presented a clarification, stating that his remarks were out of frustration.
“At that time, I thought that Sachin didn’t help. I was extremely frustrated. But Sachin did everything for me, including paying for my two surgeries in 2013. We spoke, and childhood friendship came forward,” he explained.
Further, Vinod Kambli also said that Sachin has also helped him in his comebacks, “Sachin told me how to play. I made nine comebacks. We are cricketers, we got hurt. When we go out, we also get hurt,” he shared while reflecting on his declining.
The former cricketer was also seen cherishing his professional journey and expressing his gratitude to his coach.
“The double hundred at Wankhede, I will cherish the most. Achrekar sir was with me, and we had such a great team. I used to have fun battles with Muttiah Muralitharan and our opponents, Kambli recalled.
Additionally, Kambli was once known as a better performer than Sachin on the field. His record-breaking skills and double centuries against England, Zimbabwe, and Sri Lanka in the test matches made him a remarkable cricketing sensation during his era. However, hit by severe personal and professional ups and downs, Kambli made his official retirement in 2009 and never returned to cricket.
