Punjabi artist Diljit Dosanjh is currently on his musical Dil-Luminati Tour India. The artist is all geared up to perform in Chandigarh on 14th December 2024. It is hard to deny that Diljit’s earlier concerts in Delhi, Jaipur, Hyderabad, and Bangalore gathered massive crowds and publicity. However, his scheduled show in Sector 34 of Chandigarh has ignited a controversy.
Chandigarh Authorities’ Advice to Diljit
The Chandigarh Child Rights Commission has issued an advisory to the singer. The issue advises the artist to exclude the songs that mention drugs and alcohol from his concert’s playlist.
According to the statement of Commission’s Chairperson, Shipra Bansal, “Dosanjh’s concert set to take place Exhibition Ground in Chandigarh will be liable for penal action if the order is not complied with.” Songs that refer or allude to alcohol, drugs and violence affect children of impressionable age, the panel further added.
Important Guidelines in the Advisory
The authorities have penned few restrictions for Dosanjh and the event organizers. These include:
- Restriction on singing songs that promote alcohol, drugs, violence, or gun culture. This includes tracks like Patiala Peg, 5 Taara, and Case.
- Prohibition on rephrasing or altering these songs to bypass the restrictions.
- Children are not to be invited on stage during performances.
- Alcohol must not be served to individuals under the legal drinking age of 25.
Why is Diljit Facing These Restrictions?
This is not the first time that the artist got such notice. Similar issues were raised earlier in Diljit’s Delhi and Hyderabad concerts, where the authorities cautioned him for promoting such themes in his music. The notice regarding Chandigarh concert follows a campaign led by Panditrao Dharenavar, an associate professor in Chandigarh.
Panditrao has been a vocal advocate to supress the glorification of alcohol, drugs, and violence in Punjabi music industry. His complaint highlights the concerns about the lyrics of popular songs like 5 Taara and Case, that promote drinking and drug use. The notice warns Diljit against performing these songs and involving children during performances. As such incidents have negative impact on the audience.
Diljit Singing Songs With Rephrasing Lyrics
During his concert in Hyderabad, Diljit altered the lyrics of his songs. He replaced the references to alcohol with other words. Additionally, he faced backlash from right-wing groups in Indore for reciting lines from Rahat Indori’s poem, “Kisi Ke Baap Ka Hindustan Thodi Hai.” This phrase is often heard during the anti-CAA agitation.
Diljit’s Chandigarh concert is facing many issues and controversies. Apparently, DC Nishant Kumar Yadav, SSP, and Traffic SSP, of Chandigarh have cited issues regarding crowd control and venue. Diljit has not issued any statement or has reacted to the notice. Any further update regarding the notice is yet to come.
