Sandeep Reddy Vanga is a director who has significantly impacted Indian cinema, grabbing attention with his unconventional storytelling and fearless approach to filmmaking.
Whether it is through his bold narratives, intense characters, or striking visuals, he has consistently sparked debates among audiences and critics alike. While his films have achieved tremendous commercial success at the box office, they have also been scrutinized for their portrayal of violence and masculinity. In a recent interview, Vanga admitted that no matter how he directs a film, critics will always find fault with his work. His candid and often witty responses make him one of the most intriguing filmmakers of recent times.
A Movie Without Male Leads?
In an engaging conversation with the YouTube channel Game Changers, Sandeep Reddy Vanga opened up about his career journey, the criticism his films receive, and his future projects. During the interview, he was asked an interesting hypothetical question: If given a choice, would he prefer making a film without songs or a film without a male lead actor?
Without hesitating, Vanga responded, “There is one idea where I want to make a film with no male lead actor.” His response took many by surprise, considering the dominant male protagonists in his previous works.
When the host suggested that women who have criticized his movies might appreciate this decision, the filmmaker had a sharp retort, stating, “Vo bhi pasand nahi aayega unko, main likh ke deta hoon.” (They will not like that either. I can give it in writing.) He further added that he might take on such a project in the next four to five years and confidently predicted that people would still find reasons to criticize it. His statement reflects his belief that no matter what he creates, there will always be an audience divided in opinion.
Sandeep’s Preference: Ranbir Over Shahid
During the same interview, Sandeep was asked to choose between two of the biggest stars he has worked with—Shahid Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor. His response was clear: he chose Ranbir Kapoor over Shahid Kapoor and picked his recent blockbuster Animal over Kabir Singh.
Explaining his choice, Vanga revealed that Animal succeeded in part due to the strong understanding between him and Ranbir Kapoor. The director praised the Bollywood superstar for his commitment and alignment with the film’s vision, emphasizing how the actor supported all the creative decisions without hesitation.
He elaborated on this by saying, “For anything, there are so many scenes where any actor could say, _‘Nahi, ye thoda zyada hua, ye thoda kam hua’ (_No, this was a bit too much, or this wasn’t enough).” However, he explained that he and Ranbir shared a unique understanding—whatever the director liked, the actor also liked. This “directly proportional link” between them, according to Vanga, contributed significantly to the film’s success.
A Filmmaker Who Divides Opinions
Despite his massive success, Sandeep Reddy Vanga remains a polarizing figure in Indian cinema. His films, while appreciated by many for their raw storytelling and emotional depth, have also been accused of glorifying toxic masculinity and violence. Critics often take issue with his portrayal of aggressive male characters and the intense relationships depicted in his films. However, Vanga remains unfazed by such criticisms and continues to stand by his creative choices.
He acknowledges that his style of filmmaking is not for everyone and seems to embrace the controversy that follows him. His recent statements suggest that he is well aware of his reputation and is unbothered by the criticisms. Instead, he focuses on his artistic vision and remains confident in the impact his films create.
