Farmer Dies at Khanauri Border After Suffering Paralytic Attack

Punjab: In a series of farmers protests in Punjab and Haryana, an elderly farmer from a village of the Faridkot district, who was sitting in protest at the Khanauri interstate border point, passed away on Sunday, January 12, 2025.
Notably, the 80-year-old farmer suffered from a paralytic attack and was immediately rushed to Patialas Rajindra Hospital, where he succumbed during his treatment.
The deceased has been identified as Joga Singh. He was a resident of Godara Village in Faridkot and had been an active participant in the protest at the Punjab-Haryana border for 10 months.
According to the reports, Joga Singh had suffered from a stroke a few days ago. He was subsequently admitted to the hospital and undergoing treatment for a few days. However, he died on Sunday morning.
This is to be noted that this is the fourth case of a farmer death since the second stint of protest has erupted since February 2024. Earlier, a farmer namedResham Singhtook his life by consuming a poisonous substance during the protest. He was reportedly frustrated over the centers behavior with the protesting farmers and not addressing their grievances.
Resham Singh was a native of the Tarn Taran district of Punjab. On January 9, 2025, he took the decision to end his life by gulping down the poisonous substance. As soon as the incident came into light, he was immediately rushed to the hospital. However, during the treatment, he succumbed to the infection.
Meanwhile, these deaths of farmers highlighted their ongoing challenges during the recent protest.
Additionally, the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha on Sunday decided to reschedule their proposed meetings in the wake of the above situation and considering the deteriorating condition of Jagjit Singh Dallewal. He has been on a fast-unto-death strike for over 48 days, demanding a legal guarantee of the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops. Dallewal has also written to religious leaders, urging them to intervene and persuade the government to address their demands.
