Born on December 14, 1934, in Hyderabad, Benegal was the cousin of iconic filmmaker Guru Dutt. His first film, Ankur (1974), was a breakthrough success. Nishant (1975) earned international recognition, including a Palme dOr nomination at Cannes.

He was awarded with Padma Shri (1976); Padma Bhushan (1991); Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2005): The highest recognition in Indian cinema and many of the National Filmfare awards.
