This glorious celestial event was witnessed in the country (India) from 7.23 PM, on Wednesday i.e. 12th Feb., 2025. It did rise in the eastern sky at sunset and reached its highest point at midnight, marking it to be the best time to observe the moon. According to NASA, the term “Snow Moon” originated from Native American and European traditions, as February typically experiences heavy snowfall in the Northern Hemisphere. During this time, the night of the full moon is called ‘Snow Moon’.
On this day, the moon reaches the farthest point while orbiting the Earth. The Snow Moon gets visible when it is exactly in line with the sun in front of the Earth. During this time, the moon also looks a little smaller than on normal days.
This lunar phenomenon is also called the “Hunger Moon” due to the scarcity of resources during the winter season.
Other popular names for this celestial phenomenon in Celtic and Old English traditions are Storm Moon, Ice Moon, or Bear Moon.
In various traditions, the Snow Moon symbolises perseverance and reflection, aligning with the challenges and introspection that often accompany late winter months.
This year’s second full moon, known as the snow moon, arrived just in time for Valentine’s Day. February is also the perfect time to spot Venus, the planet named after the Roman Goddess of Love, as it shines at its brightest this month, according to NASA.
As per the geographical sources, by the evening of Wednesday, Feb. 12, when as the twilight ended at 6:41 p.m. (EST), the rising Moon was 7 degrees above the east-northeastern horizon with the bright star Regulus 2 degrees to the right.
