In a revolutionary breakthrough, the Russian Health Ministry claims to have developed a cancer vaccine. As per the reports, the vaccine will be launched in early 2025 and will be made available free of cost to the patients. The General Director of the Radiology Medical Research Centre of the Russian Ministry of Health, Andrey Kaprin stated,” The country has developed its own mRNA cancer vaccine. The vaccine will be distributed to the public free of charge.”

    Cancer Vaccine

Alexander Ginsburg, Director of the Gamaleya National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology, told TASS, “The vaccine’s pre-clinical trials have shown that it suppresses tumor development and potential metastases.” As of now, the name of the vaccine has not been disclosed.

    Russia Develops Cancer Vaccine

This significant development follows the statement of President Vladimir Putin earlier this year through a TV broadcasting. The President stated, “We have come very close to the creation of so-called cancer vaccines and immunomodulatory drugs of a new generation.”

    Cancer Cases Increasing in Russia

Additionally, cancer cases are increasing in Russia, as quoted by Daily Mail UK. In 2022, Russia recorded more than 635,000 cases, with colon, breast, and lung cancers being the most common in the country. The cause for these deadly diseases is said to be the gene mutations that get inherited and develop over time. Other causes that trigger these diseases include cigarette smoke or alcohol.

    AI Applications in Cancer Vaccine

During a news conference, Ginsburg explained that apparently, the help of artificial neural could reduce the time required to create a personalized cancer vaccine, which at present takes hours. “The process of designing personalized vaccines is time-consuming because it involves complex matrix methods in mathematics to determine how a vaccine or customized mRNA should be structured. We have partnered with the Ivannikov Institute, which will use AI, specifically neural network computing, to streamline this process, cutting down the time to approximately half an hour to an hour,” said Russia’s vaccine chief.

Role of Cancer Vaccine in Cancer Treatment and Management

Cancer contains tumor-associated antigen substances that cannot be seen in normal cells. Furthermore, vaccines hold a significant position in cancer management as these boosts immune system and help them recognize or react to these substances. Preventive vaccines, like the HPV vaccine, offer protection against viruses, lowering the risk of certain cancers, such as cervical cancer.

Other Nations Working on Cancer Vaccines

Apart from Russia, other nations are also in line of producing cancer-preventive vaccines. In May, several researchers at the University of Florida tested an individualized vaccine in four patients with glioblastoma. The glioblastoma is an aggressive brain cancer that took the lives of Senator John McCain and Beau Biden.

Later the team discovered that the vaccine triggered a strong immune response, two days after the injection. In UK, scientists are testing a personalized vaccine for melanoma. Early results indicate that it could significantly improve survival rates for this deadly form of skin cancer. Regarding the vaccine developed by Russia, the scientists cited that each shot is designed for the individual patient, similar to the vaccines made in West.

However, there is no clarity on which specific cancers the vaccine is designed to treat, its effectiveness, or how Russia plans to distribute it.
