How Did a Techie Endure 30-Hour Digital Arrest Horror?
Share
A 44-year-old techier from Hyderabad recently experienced a 30-hour digital arrest orchestrated by cybercriminals impersonating FedEx agents and Mumbai police officers. The nightmare started on a Friday night when the techie received a suspicious text message, which he initially ignored. However, around 3 AM on Saturday, the situation took a serious turn.
In a Digital Arrest, fraudsters claim themselves as officials from different government agencies or law enforcement organizations like CBI, Narcotics, TRAI, RBI, customs, and tax authorities. They typically initiate contact by calling the victim, using intimidation tactics to extort money. Victims are often kept in one location, usually their homes, under the false claim that they have been arrested.
The fraudsters called the techie, alleging that his Aadhaar number was associated with a money laundering investigation. Using fear and deception, they convinced him to stay on WhatsApp video call and cut off communication with his family. The cybercriminals also directed him to check into a lodge in Ameerpet, keeping the video call active the entire time.
The scammers on the video call repeatedly threatened the techie with arrest and potential legal issues for his family if he didnt comply with their demands. This psychological manipulation kept him under their influence, as he feared serious consequences if he disobeyed.
The techies ordeal continued until around 4 AM on Sunday when the video call finally ended. Taking advantage of this moment, he immediately contacted the Hyderabad cybercrime helpline for help. Cybercrime officials quickly intervened, ensuring his safety and ending the digital arrest.
This alarming incident highlights the risks associated with digital arrest scams, where fraudsters pretend to be government officials to steal money and deceive victims. The techies experience serves as a warning about the cunning and ruthlessness of these cyber criminals.
In response to recent incidents, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has issued a warning to the public about digital scams. During the 115th episode of Mann Ki Baat on Sunday, PM Modi specifically addressed the digital arrest scam, clarifying that no government agencies threaten individuals over mobile phones and demand money.
A post from PM Narendra Modi on X (Twitter) stated, “The countrymen need to be very cautious about the scams happening in the name of digital arrest. I am telling you these three steps of digital security, which you must remember”
On the other hand, another post from PMO India on X (Twitter) shared the key steps to be safe from digital scams. The post quoted, Beware of Digital Arrest frauds! No investigative agency will ever contact you by phone or video call for enquiries. Follow these 3 steps to stay safe: Stop, Think, Take Action.
To avoid falling victim to similar scams, individuals should be cautious of unexpected messages, especially those demanding personal information or money. Verifying the identity of the caller through official channels and reaching out to cybercrime authorities can be beneficial in these cases.
In conclusion, the 30-hour digital nightmare experienced by the tech professional in Hyderabad highlights the need for heightened awareness and vigilance against digital scams. By staying informed and vigilant, individuals can safeguard themselves from such threats.
