For players like Justin Hubner, a player of Wolverhampton Wanderers in England, the difference between life in Europe and Indonesia is significant. I cant leave my hotel (in Indonesia) because there are people waiting for me, running to me. Everywhere I go its exciting, Hubner says.
His dual citizenship and Indonesian roots have transformed him into a national icon. His Instagram following skyrocketed from 5,000 to 2.7 million once fans discovered his ties to Indonesia.
There is admiration for Hubners family too with his mother, garnering nearly 50,000+ followers on her own social media account. When fans meet him, emotions run high with some even expressing tears of joy. This deep connection between players and their fans highlights the intense loyalty and admiration of Indonesian soccer players’ commands.
Clubs are increasingly recognizing this trend and are eager to take advantage of it. FC Dallas, where Paes plays, has experienced a notable increase in social media engagement following his joining the team. Theres been a big boost in terms of engagement for the club. If I play for a club, I like to help them as much as possible because they help me a lot too, he notes. Clubs like Oxford United are also investing in young Indonesian talent, hoping to expand a larger fanbase and their presence in Asia.
Erick Thohir, co-owner of Oxford United and Head of the Football Association of Indonesia, emphasizes the importance of nurturing young talent. We need to be investing in young players at Oxford, he says. Thohir believes that giving players like Ferdinan a chance will not only enhance the teams performance but also raise awareness and engagement among fans of the club.
The emergence of previously unknown soccer players into superstars in Indonesia highlights the countrys deep-rooted passion for the sport. With millions of fans, players can anticipate a significant transformation in their lives upon wearing the national jersey.
