India has launched “Operation Brahma,” a relief mission to assist Myanmar after a fatal 7.7-magnitude earthquake on March 28, 2025. It claimed more than 1,000 lives and more than 2,000 were injured.

Aid Dispatch and Immediate Response

With lightning solidarity, India sent an Indian Air Force (IAF) C-130J with approximately 15 tonnes of relief aid to Yangon. The shipment contained the most vital essentials like tents, blankets, sleeping bags, food packets, hygiene kits, generators, and life-saving medicines. Ministry of External Affairs spokesman Randhir Jaiswal asserted India’s first-responder’s status by being the first to transport the first tranche of help to Yangon without any damage.

Government Comments and Assurances

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar once again promised India’s support in helping Myanmar in this crisis. He reported that the IAF aircraft had blankets, tarpaulins, hygiene kits, sleeping bags, solar lamps, food packets, and kitchen sets. Apart from that, he reported search and rescue teams and medical teams were also on board to help on the ground. Jaishankar ensured India would keep a close eye on the situation and send more help if needed.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also showed his deep concern regarding the earthquakes in Myanmar and Thailand. He wished all concerned well-being and safety and reiterated India’s willingness to provide full cooperation.

Coordination with Myanmar Authorities

The Indian Embassy in Myanmar has collaborated with the Myanmar government to ensure effective relief and aid delivery. The embassy has maintained regular contact with the Indian community in Myanmar and has provided an emergency contact number for Indian nationals requiring help: +95-95419602.

Regional Impact and International Aid Efforts

The effects of the earthquake were felt beyond Myanmar in regional countries China and Thailand. There was loss of buildings on a large scale in Thailand, and the collapse of the near-complete skyscraper in Bangkok came with some fatalities. The extent of the damage saw an international delivery of relief goods. The initiative of India with Operation Brahma is one of its displays of desiring solidarity at the grass-root level and assisting in the hour of need.
