India's most seasoned ministers reiterated the nation's firm commitment to defend its interests in its current trade talks with the United States. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal both reiterated that India will not be bullied into concessions on agreements that sacrifice its sovereignty or economic agenda, even as the U.S. granted a 90-day tariff reprieve.

“We Never Negotiate at Gunpoint"

Discussing Italy-India Business, Science, and Technology Forum, India's Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal ensured India's position in the talks on trade. "We never negotiate out of compulsion," he emphasized, citing time pressure may push things in direction of talks but surely cannot allow rapid decision to undermine the nation's national interest. Goyal added further that all the talks are done on a policy of "India First" so the country's interests in the process of development can be met without coercion.

Grabbing the Window of Opportunity

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar at the Carnegie Global Technology Summit realized that trade agreements need to be sealed, especially with America. He thought the world today, with recent American tariff comments, had problems as well as opportunities. "This time, we are certainly poised for a very high level of urgency. I mean, we see a window. We want to see things. So, our trade arrangements are actually challenging," Jaishankar stated, referring to India's assertive strategy to benefit from the short-term tariff relief.

Trade Negotiations Progress

India and the U.S. seem to have agreed on the terms of reference for negotiation of the first phase of a bilateral trade deal. Indian officials are hoping that it would be feasible to conclude a mutually acceptable deal within the next 90 days. The U.S. continues to be India's largest trading partner, two-way trade with the nation reaching more than $118 billion during the 2023-24 financial year.

Balancing Urgency with Prudence

While both countries are keen to expand trade ties, Indian authorities yet again state that a balance is the way ahead. Goyal reiterated that the negotiations for trade would have to take place only when both the nations are sensitive to each other's requirements and concerns. Jaishankar agreed, stressing the importance of cautious negotiations so the deal is in sync with India's long-term economic objectives.

In the period of the 90-day tariff suspension, India is determined to get a trade deal that serves its economic and national interests. The coming weeks will determine the trajectory of India-U.S. trade relations, with both countries hoping for a fair and comprehensive deal.
