IPL 2025: New Low for MS Dhoni & Co
Share
MS Dhoni's unexpected return as the Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) captain for the third time hasn't had the dream start fans hoped for. In what was supposed to be a morale-boosting home game at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, CSK hit a new low in their IPL journey. Facing Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the team registered its lowest-ever total at home and one of the worst in its entire IPL history. This dismal performance came after Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out of the season due to a fractured finger, forcing the CSK management to bring Dhoni back at the helm.
Gaikwad’s injury has not only affected the team leadership but also left a significant void in CSK’s top-order batting. The dynamic opener had been a crucial part of their recent campaigns, and his absence was felt right from the start of the match. Openers Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra failed to provide any stability, with Conway managing just 12 runs before falling in the fourth over. Ravindra followed suit, getting dismissed in the fifth for a meager four.
This early collapse set the tone for the innings, and things only went downhill from there. Without Gaikwad’s calm presence and consistent scoring, CSK’s batting order looked unsettled and vulnerable against KKR's bowling attack.
Vijay Shankar, one of the few batters who showed some promise, tried to rebuild with a 29-run knock off 21 balls. However, his dismissal in the 10th over further dented CSK’s hopes. Rahul Tripathi added 16 before getting out on the final delivery of the 11th over, leaving CSK reeling at 65/4.
Shivam Dube walked in at No. 5 and provided a glimmer of hope with an unbeaten 31 off 29 deliveries. Unfortunately for Dube, no other batter stayed long enough to build a partnership with him. In a span of just a few overs, the team lost R. Ashwin (1), Ravindra Jadeja (0), Deepak Hooda (0), and even skipper MS Dhoni, who could manage only a single run.
KKR's spinners had a field day as they completely outfoxed the CSK batting lineup. The trio of Sunil Narine, Varun Chakaravarthy, and Harshit Rana wreaked havoc with their sharp turn and deceptive variations. Spinners alone accounted for six CSK wickets—marking the highest number of wickets CSK has lost to spin in a single IPL innings.
Their disciplined bowling performance, coupled with CSK’s lack of footwork and poor shot selection, ensured the home team never got into rhythm.
When the dust settled, CSK's scoreboard read a dismal 103/9 at the end of 20 overs—marking their lowest-ever total at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Their previous lowest at the venue was 109, also against the Mumbai Indians, back in 2019. This latest score is also CSK’s third-lowest total in IPL history and the lowest total any team has posted against KKR.
The only worse total at Chepauk belongs to Royal Challengers Bangalore, who were bowled out for just 70 runs in 2019.
With Gaikwad out and Dhoni stepping in under tough circumstances, CSK must now re-evaluate their strategies quickly. The team still has firepower, but the top-order must find answers against quality spin attacks. Dube’s form is a positive, but without support, even his efforts fall short. Fans will hope that this setback is just a blip and not a sign of things to come.
For now, CSK finds itself at a crossroads—needing inspiration, consistency, and leadership to bounce back before it's too late in the season.
