    Electronic cigarettes, commonly known as e-cigarettes or vapes, have emerged as a popular alternative to traditional tobacco smoking. Designed to simulate the experience of smoking, these devices operate by heating a liquid solution into an aerosol that users inhale.

    This aerosol typically contains nicotine, flavourings, and other chemicals, but lacks the harmful tar and many of the toxins found in cigarette smoke. Despite electronic cigarettes appeal as a potentially safer option, the long-term health effects of e-cigarettes are still under scrutiny, prompting ongoing debate and research.

    Overview of E-Cigarette Components and Functionality 

    An e-cigarette consists of three main components: an atomizer, a power source such as a battery, and a container for e-liquid, which may be a cartridge or tank. When a user inhales or activates the device, the atomizer heats the e-liquid, usually composed of propylene glycol, glycerine, nicotine, and flavorings.

    This heating process converts the liquid into vapor, which is then inhaled by the user. Unlike traditional cigarettes, which produce smoke through combustion, e-cigarettes generate vapor, which is perceived to be less harmful.

While they produce fewer toxins than cigarettes, studies indicate that e-cigarette vapor contains harmful substances such as formaldehyde and acrolein, which pose risks to respiratory health. The long-term effects of inhaling these chemicals are still not fully understood, necessitating further research.
