Experts suggest that the issue lies not with the dish itself but with the way the ingredients, particularly the chicken, are prepared, handled, and stored. Food poisoning can occur due to undercooked meat or improper refrigeration.

    Undercooked Meat During Rush Hours

The slow-roasting process used to prepare shawarma involves using a flame that may not penetrate the meat deeply enough, leading to instances of undercooked meat, especially during busy periods. Inadequate cooking can expose consumers to harmful bacteria such as Salmonella or E. coli.

    Improper Refrigeration and Storage

Shawarma ingredients, including meats, sauces, and utensils, must be stored and handled properly to prevent bacterial growth. Inadequate refrigeration, cross-contamination, and leaving meat unrefrigerated for extended periods can contribute to the proliferation of harmful bacteria, posing serious health risks to consumers.

    Pay Attention to Cleanliness

Observe the cleanliness of the establishment and the food handlers. Ensure that the preparation area is clean and that the individuals handling the food follow proper hygiene practices.

Be Cautious with Raw or Undercooked Meat

Exercise caution when consuming raw or undercooked meat, especially in shawarma. Request thorough cooking or opt for alternative fillings if concerned about the meat’s doneness.

    Ensure Proper Refrigeration and Storage

Confirm that shawarma ingredients are stored at appropriate temperatures to prevent bacterial growth. This includes refrigerating meats, sauces, and other perishable components.

With improper refrigeration, undercooked meat, and contaminated ingredients being identified as potential causes of food poisoning cases. It is crucial for both vendors and consumers to prioritize hygiene and safe food handling practices.

By taking these precautions, individuals can continue to enjoy the flavors of shawarma without compromising their health and well-being.
