On social media lately, you’ll see people trying out the Ghibli art trend. They are transforming their images into Ghibli art with the help of ChatGpt’s Ghibli Art studio. It started a quirky trend but quickly turned into a social media phenomenon, where everyone from celebrities to influencers, everyone is trying out this new fad.
What is Ghibli Art?
“Ghibli art” refers to the distinctive visual style of Studio Ghibli, the renowned Japanese animation studio founded by Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, and Toshio Suzuki.
The color palettes for Ghibli art tend to be soft, muted, and often feature pastel hues, creating a gentle and inviting atmosphere. Nature plays a significant role in Ghibli films, and elements like trees, clouds, water, and landscapes are often depicted with meticulous detail.
Studio Ghibli has enchanted the audience with films like Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro or Howl’s moving Castle.
How did this trend start?
AI- generated Ghibli style images were possible for a long time. However, Seattle- based software engineer Grant Slatton played an important role in making this a trend mainstream and popular.
Shortly after Open AI launched this updated version with advance photo generating tools, Slatton shared an AI generated Ghibli style image of him with his wife and dog. This quickly gained attention receiving 44,000 likes and over 46 million views.

This trend also highlights the growing role of artificial intelligence in making of art and creativity. While it was not easy to create unique art style like Ghibli in past but with the help of AI it’s possible, and that is the reason people are obsessing over it.
Amidst this trend, some people are criticizing the trend as it was AI generated, according to them it’s a disrespect towards the actual artists!
