Manish Sisodia loses to Tarvinder Singh Marwah in Jangpura: A Major Blow to AAP

In a dramatic turn of events, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Tarvinder Singh Marwah emerged victorious in the Jangpura assembly constituency, defeating Aam Aadmi Partys (AAP) Manish Sisodia. This result marks a significant setback for AAP, as Sisodia, who was once considered the partys second-in-command, was expected to secure a win based on early trends.

A Triangular Contest in Jangpura

Jangpura, one of the 70 legislative seats in Delhi, witnessed a three-way contest among AAP’s Manish Sisodia, BJP’s Tarvinder Singh Marwah, and Congress’s Farhad Suri. Located in South Delhi, the constituency has historically been a battleground for key political figures. However, in this election, Marwah’s victory signaled a shift in voter sentiment, dealing a decisive blow to AAPs hopes.

Who is Tarvinder Singh Marwah?

Tarvinder Singh Marwah, the Delhi BJP functionary in charge of the Sikh Cell, is a seasoned politician with deep roots in Delhis political landscape. He previously served as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Jangpura for three consecutive terms between 1998 and 2013. During his tenure, he also held the position of Parliamentary Secretary to the Chief Minister of Delhi. In 2023, Marwah switched allegiances from the Congress party to the BJP, a move that has evidently worked in BJPs favor.

Apart from his political roles, Marwah is also an active member of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee. His current net worth stands at an impressive Rs 49,67,68,001, making him one of the wealthier candidates in the race.

Jangpuras Electoral History

The Jangpura assembly seat has been a stronghold of AAP in recent elections. In 2020, AAPs Praveen Kumar won the seat with 45,133 votes, leading BJP’s Impreet Singh Bakshi (29,070 votes) and Congress’s Marwah (13,565 votes). Similarly, in 2015, Kumar secured victory with 43,927 votes against BJP’s Maninder Singh Dhir (23,477) and Marwah (22,662).

Marwahs return to the legislative assembly after more than a decade underscores BJPs growing influence in the capital and the shifting dynamics of Delhis political landscape. His win also signals a resurgence of BJP in constituencies where AAP had previously enjoyed dominance.

A Setback for AAP

Manish Sisodias defeat is a severe blow to AAP, which has struggled against mounting challenges in this election. Sisodia, the former deputy CM and a close aide of Arvind Kejriwal, was one of the most influential leaders in AAP.
