The hypersonic missile system will reliably contain any rivals in the Pacific region that can affect the security of our state, Kim said, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). He added that the missile’s performance, which includes traveling at speeds twelve times the speed of sound and hitting a target 1,500 kilometers away, is globally significant. This missiles performance could not be ignored worldwide, he asserted, emphasizing its capability to penetrate dense defensive barriers and deliver a serious military strike against adversaries.

The missile launch was swiftly condemned by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul. During a press conference, Blinken highlighted the importance of strengthening the trilateral alliance among the U.S., South Korea, and Japan. We condemned the DPRKs launch of ballistic missiles today, and through a serious combined defense posture and strengthened extended deterrence, we pledged to prepare thoroughly for any potential North Korean provocations, said Cho.

He alleged that North Korea has been providing support to Russia in its ongoing conflict in Ukraine, including military personnel. According to Blinken, over 1,000 North Korean forces have suffered casualties in Russias campaigns. Additionally, Blinken warned that Moscow might share advanced space and satellite technology with Pyongyang and could even recognize North Korea as a nuclear state, reversing longstanding Russian policy.

Kim defended the missile test as a purely defensive measure, asserting, This is clearly a plan and effort for self-defense, not an offensive plan and action.
